Alexander, Pickett named Big South Track Athletes of the Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Dominique Alexander and Chastity Pickett have been voted the 2022-23 Big South Conference Men's and Women's Track Athletes of the Year, announced Tuesday by the league office.  The awards, encompassing both indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, are voted on by the Big South head coaches as part of their annual June meeting.

Alexander earned Honorable Mention All-America honors as a member of the men's 4x100m relay team at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, helping set a school record and third-fastest ever Big South time of 39.05. Alexander finished first in both the 100m (10.20) and 200m (20.29) at the Big South Outdoor Championships and qualified for the NCAA East Preliminaries in both events. His 200m time was a school record and ranks third fastest in conference history. Alexander also set a school record 100m time of 10.11w at the UNF East Coast Relays. During the indoor season, Alexander claimed the Big South 200m title with a time of 20.99 and helped the 4x400m relay team capture first with a time of 3:13.34. He opened the season with a school record time of 20.66 in the 200m at the Clemson Invitational, which at the time ranked second-fastest in the world and third-fastest in Big South history. Alexander also helped claim the 4x400m relay school record at the South Carolina Invitational with a time of 3:13.25.

Pickett claimed First Team All-America honors in the 400m hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, finishing third in the country with a school and Big South record time of 54.86. It marked the highest individual event finish at the NCAA Championships in women's program history. Pickett also competed in the 100m hurdles at the NCAA East Preliminaries, finishing with a time of 12.94 which marked a school record and the second-fastest time in conference history. At the Big South Outdoor Championships, she won both 100m (13.34) and 400m hurdles (57.28) events. She earned first-place finishes in the 100m hurdles at the Vertklasse Meeting and the 400m hurdles at the Georgia Tech Invitational and Raleigh Relays during the outdoor season. Pickett claimed Most Valuable Athlete honors at the Big South Indoor Championships, accumulating 31.5 points with wins in the 60 meters, 60 meter hurdles and the 200 meters as well as a third-place finish in the 4x400m relay. She set three school records during the indoor season in the 60 meters (7.48), 200 meters (23.73) and 60m hurdles (8.21).

Alexander joins former Campbell runners Lawrence Kipkoech (2015, 16), Amon Terer (2017), Amon Kemboi (2018, 19) and Athanas Kioko (2021) as recipients of the Big South Men's Track Athlete of the Year. Pickett is the second Campbell women's runner to earn the award since Joan Maritim earned the honor in 2017.
