Winans to make MLB debut with Atlanta

Allan Winans has been called up by the Atlanta Braves and is set to make his Major League debut as the Braves starting pitcher Saturday night in Milwaukee. The right-handed pitcher played at Campbell from 2016-18.

Winans was selected in the 17th round (No. 500 overall) by the New York Mets in the 2018 MLB Draft. The righty was taken by Atlanta in the 2021 Rule 5 draft after topping out at AA with the Mets organization.

This season, Winans has posted a 7-3 record with a 2.81 ERA in 13 starts on the mound for AAA Gwinnett. He's tallied 89 strikeouts in 102.2 IP, and pounded the zone with a walk rate of just 6.3%, the fifth-lowest among 38 qualified International League starters.

At Campbell, Winans was named 2018 Big South Pitcher of the Year after posting a 6-4 record with a 2.73 ERA and 96 strikeouts in just 82 innings. He turned in 10 quality starts, and his 10.49 K/9 that season was a program record at the time.

Overall, Winans is the 13th Campbell Camel to reach The Show, and will become the fourth player in the MLB this season from Campbell, joining Cedric Mullins, Ryan Thompson, and Zach Neto. Having four in the major leagues in the same season ties the program record with 1962, when Jim Perry, Gaylord Perry*, Don Prince, and Cal Koonce were all active as well (*Gaylord Perry attended Campbell College but did not play baseball at Campbell).

He'll become the second Camel to debut with the Braves, along with Matt Marksberry, who made his MLB debut with Atlanta in 2015. Gaylord Perry also spent one season with the Braves in 1981.

You can catch Winans' debut against the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday night at 7:35 at Miller Park in Milwaukee.
