Alumni and friends gather for Battle for the Creek

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – More than 120 Campbell University golf alumni and friends participated in the 2024 Battle at the Creek Saturday at Keith Hills Golf Club.

Among the teams that competed were members of the 1970 NAIA national championship squad and John Crooks' 1990-91 men's team that provided him with his first of 161 (and counting) tournament coaching wins.

All five members of the 1994 women's team that represented Campbell at the NCAA East Regional were in attendance.

Steven Armstrong '97, Tim Crooks '99, Yvonne Cox-Holmes '00 and Sol Arenas '01 claimed top honors overall with a 23-under-par 49 on the par-72 layout.  Matt Moot '11, Mitch Gray '12, Harriston Ashworth '13, Daniel Barrett '13 and Scott Webb finished second at 22-under.

The five players who earned Campbell's first-ever women's NCAA Division I postseason team berth in 1994 – Janet Wooten '94, Jennifer Layman '95, Maria Maldonado '95, Martha Shooter Sutton '96 and Evelyn Kinlaw Walters '97 – won the Camel Pride Division first prize at 21-under, while Mike Christian, Donnie Reaves, Johnnie Reaves and Brandon Reece finished second, partnered with current Campbell golfer Isabella Hahne.

David Powell, Matt Monaco, Jonathan Harward and Clayton Moore teamed with CU golfer Izabella Grimbrandt claimed the Orange & Black Division first prize with a 56.  Second prize went to Michael Byrd, Joey Whaley, Bruce Thompson and Anthony Thorpe, who were paired with CU assistant coach Valeria Patino.

Abby Young, Hunter, Young, DJ Auger, Steven Hazel and Bo Crooks took home the Extra Effort Award.

James Harris won the men's longest drive on Orange #2, while Yvonne Cox-Harris claimed the women's longest drive on Black #4 as well as the women's closest to the pin on Orange #3.  David Basket won the men's closest to the pin on Orange #7.

Tim Crooks earned the CU golf team alumni honor for closest to the pin on Orange #8 and Maria Maldonado was closest to the pin among all players on Black #8.

The event celebrated Campbell's long intercollegiate golf tradition, while dates to the early 1960s and the impact of 35-year head coach John Crooks, who will be inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame on Jan. 18.  Crooks is one of just two individuals in NCAA Division I women's golf history to record at least 100 tournament coaching wins.
