Camels head to Seahawk Intercollegiate

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell continues its 2024 spring campaign this weekend when it travels down Interstate-40 to Wilmington to compete in the Seahawk Intercollegiate hosted by UNCW at the Country Club of Landfall.
 
Head coach John Crooks and associate head coach Matt Moot will start a lineup that includes freshmen Joachim Larsen Tegner and Erik Johansson, sophomore Tim Holmberg, junior Henric Bjelke and senior Garnet Manley III.
 
Eight of the 17 teams in the field enter the event ranked among the nation's top 100 led by No. 2 Auburn, No. 39 VCU and No. 24 Duke. 
 
Campbell and host UNCW represent the CAA Seahawk Intercollegiate.  The field also includes six teams from Power-5 conferences – Auburn, Duke, Maryland, Minnesota, Penn State and Virginia Tech.
 
The Camels finished sixth in last year's Seahawk Intercollegiate (286-277-289—852).  Sophomore Tim Holmberg (71-71-73—215) was T28 in last year's event and the only Camel in this season's lineup to play in the 2023 edition.

The Course: CC of Landfall Dye Course (Par 72, 7026 Yards)
The Pete Dye Course at Country Club of Landfall saw its first round in 1987. The golf course was designed by a master course architect whose honors include designations such as having created one-third of the golf courses of the "Top 100 Courses You Can Play" and four of Golf Magazine's "Greatest Courses in the United States."  Golfers on the Pete Dye Course can choose their distance from five tee sets, playing as long as 7,026 or as short as 4,859 yards over Bermuda grass fairways that lead to bentgrass greens.
 
The Coach: Now in his 34th year in charge of the Campbell men's golf program and 33rd as head coach of the CU women, John Crooks has been named league coach of the year 23 times in his tenure.  His teams have combined to earn 35 NCAA post-season trips, including 11 in a row for the women.  His teams have won 160 tournaments and with 99 career tournament titles, Crooks trails only Dan Brooks of Duke (141) on the all-time coaching victories list among Division I women's coaches.  He has guided his teams to 27 league titles, including 19 on the women's side and eight in men's competition.
 
The Lineup:
 
Junior Henric Bjelke (Oslo, Norway) owns a 74.4 scoring average over six events and is coming off the best finish (T14) of his collegiate career at the Schenkel Invitational (69-69-73—211).  He matched his season-low score in the first two rounds of the Schenkel and was named CAA golfer of the week after he tied for third in the field with 16 birdies and sixth in par-5 scoring (-8).  The Big South freshman of the year in 2022, Bjelke has played par, or better, golf, four times in 17 rounds this season.
 
Freshman Joachim Larsen Tegner (Lier, Norway) recorded a collegiate-best T4 finish in the rain-shortened Battle at Briar's Creek (67-75—142), where he posted his best score in the opening round.  Larsen Tegner has recorded par, or better, scores 11 times in 23 rounds, and owns a 73.1 scoring average while playing in all eight CU events this season.  A member of the Norwegian junior national team, Larsen Tegner finished T10 at the Georgetown Intercollegiate (72-70-77—221).
 
Freshman Erik Johansson (Hollviken, Sweden) leads the team with a 72.4 scoring average over eight events.  He has played par, or better, golf in 11 of 23 rounds, including a collegiate-low, 5-under 66 at the Furman Intercollegiate, where he posted a T12 finish.  Ranked No. 22 in Sweden (U21), Johansson has placed among the top 20 individuals five times.  He finished T19 (72-74—146) at the Battle at Briar's Creek.
 
Sophomore Tim Holmberg (Uppsala, Sweden) has matched his collegiate low round (69) three times this season while posting a 74.9 scoring average.  The 2023 Big South Conference freshman of the year finished T26 (77-78-73—228) at the Georgetown Intercollegiate and was 2-under overall (T33) at the VCU Shootout (73-69-72—214).  Holmberg placed T28 in last year's Seahawk Intercollegiate (71-71-73—215).
 
Senior Garnet Manley III (Lynchburg, Va.) owns a 75.9 scoring average over three tournaments this year. He posted a career-best T20 finish last fall at the Georgetown Intercollegiate (73-77-74—224) and was T25 at the Wolfpack Individual Invitational (71-77—148), where he shot a collegiate low in the opening round.
 
Next: Following the Seahawk Intercollegiate, the Camels will compete Mar. 29-31 in the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate co-hosted by East Carolina and Elon at Cutter Creek CC in Snow Hill, N.C.
