Johansson wins individual title; Camels finish 5th

First collegiate tournament win for freshman from Sweden

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Erik Johansson won individual honors and Campbell finished fifth in the team standings after Monday's final round of the Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Landfall.

In a field that included seven top-100 teams, Johansson recorded a bogey-free, 6-under-par 66 Monday to finish at 8-under for the event (71-71-66—208), two stroke clear of Auburn's Jackson Kolvin (72-70-68—210), who entered the event ranked as the No. 5 player in NCAA Division I.

A freshman from Hollviken, Sweden, Johansson matched his collegiate-low round and posted his lowest round to par Monday.  In an event where only five players finished in red numbers, Johansson made only 5 bogeys over 54 holes to go along with 13 birdies (T3rd in the field) and 36 pars.  Johansson led the event in par-3 scoring (-3), tied for second on the par-4 holes (+1) and was T6 on the par-5 layouts (-6).

"It was all I could ask for today," said Johansson.  "I feel like all my hard work went into this round.  I made a lot of important par putts, arguably more important than some of the birdie putts, just to keep the momentum going.  The golf course is unbelievably pure.  It was very windy and also cold, which meant that you had to hit it under the wind or try and keep it low, something that I've luckily grown up doing. It was very challenging conditions all around."

No. 2 Auburn won team honors at 11-over-par (300-287-288—875) on the 7030-yard Jack Nicklaus design.  Campbell finished fifth (302-298-291—891) one stroke behind No. 39 VCU and ahead of host UNCW plus power five conference members Penn State, Virginia Tech, Minnesota and Maryland.

Johansson shot an opening-round 71 and was the lone player to break par Sunday morning in gusty conditions.  His victory marked the second-straight year that a Camel freshman claimed a collegiate title after Amadeus Susanto won the 2023 Wolfpack Individual Invitational.

"We have seen Erik play well," said head coach John Crooks.  "The weather was so bad to start out, all you could do was focus on the next shot. Today, he was shining, in control of the golf ball, thinking well, and he's a proud champion."

Campbell junior Henric Bjelke (77-76-70—223) was two-under Monday and finished in a tie for 20th place.  Freshman Joachim Larsen Tegner finished T47 (76-75-78—229), senior Garnet Manley III T74 (78-80-77—235) and sophomore Tim Holmberg T79 (83-76-78—237).

The Camels open play Friday in the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate co-hosted by East Carolina and Elon at Cutter Creek CC in Snow Hill, N.C.

The Course: CC of Landfall Nicklaus Course (Par 72, 7030 Yards)
Nestled along the Intracoastal Waterway near Wilmington, N.C. is a coastal community with a history that spans more than four centuries. Landfall opened the first 18-holes of this Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course in 1990. Later, in 2000, nine more Signature holes were added.  The course features rolling oak and pine lined fairways, strategic sand and grass bunkering, Bermuda grass in the fairways and rough, smooth, undulating Bent Grass greens, and water on 15 of 18 holes.  The first 18-holes take strategic advantage of Landfall's saltwater and freshwater marshes in a double loop configuration that is both challenging and uniquely beautiful. The incorporation of natural wetlands gives the course a distinctive look while preserving a valuable resource. Equipped with five sets of tee placements, the course may stretch up to 7,145 yards.
