BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell two-way player
Grant Knipp was selected by the Seattle Mariners with the 183
rd pick in the sixth round of the 2024 MLB Draft.
Knipp became the 18
th Camel drafted in the past 10 seasons, and his selection marks the fourth consecutive year a Campbell player has heard their name in the draft.
Knipp will be the fifth former Camel to currently be a member of the Mariners organization. Spencer Packard is with AAA side Tacoma,
Ty Cummings is currently on the High-A Everett AquaSox squad and
Ernie Day and
Jarrod Belbin are playing with Single-A side Modesto.
Despite only playing 29 games due to injury this past season, Knipp made his mark in college baseball. He was named First Team All-CAA, slashing .402/.547/1.029, and he finished fourth in the conference with 18 home runs.
Through the first 22 games of the season, Knipp led Division I baseball in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage, outpacing eventual Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy winner Charlie Condon from Georgia, who was selected with the third overall pick.
In addition to his power at the plate, Knipp began pitching this season for the first time in his collegiate career. In four appearances, he totaled six strikeouts and a 1.59 ERA and two saves.
Among pitchers performing during the second day of the 2024 MLB Draft Combine, Knipp had the fifth-fastest velocity on his fastball, topping out at 97.2 mph. He also ranked fourth on the day for induced vertical break on his fastball.
During his career at Campbell, Knipp batted .314 and scored 100 runs. He had a slugging percentage of .692, recording 57 extra-base hits (35 home runs) and 117 RBI.
Knipp was named to the ABCA/Rawlings Atlantic All-Region Second Team at the conclusion of this season. He was also named to the Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List, a Midseason All-American by D1Baseball and their Midseason Breakout Star.
