Seth Johnson to make MLB Debut for Philadelphia

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Former Campbell pitcher Seth Johnson has been called up by the Philadelphia Phillies and will make his MLB debut as their starting pitcher on Sunday against the Miami Marlins.

A right-handed pitcher from Concord, N.C., Johnson played for the Camels during the 2019 season before being drafted in the first round (No. 40 overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2019 MLB Draft. At the time of his draft, Johnson was the highest draft pick in Campbell baseball history.

Earlier this season, he was traded from the Baltimore Orioles' organization to Philadelphia, where he made his AAA debut for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Through three appearances in AAA, Johnson has a 2-0 record and a 0.56 ERA. He's allowed just five hits in 16.0 innings and has 13 strikeouts compared to six walks.

Johnson was recently named the AAA International League Pitcher of the Week when he allowed only one hit and five strikeouts in six innings against Syracuse.

In the 2024 season, Johnson has made 23 appearances across AA and AAA, recording 83 strikeouts in 88.2 innings and a 2.33 ERA.

In his lone season at Campbell, Johnson had a 3-3 record in 11 starts. He struck out 81 batters and held opponents to a .254 average. He ranks third in Campbell history in K/9 for a season, setting a mark of 10.99. Prior to Campbell, Johnson played at Louisburg College, where he played infield and pitched occasionally for two seasons under former Camel Blake Herring.

Johnson becomes the 14th Camel to reach The Show. He is the fifth Campbell player to play in the MLB this season, joining Cedric Mullins, Zach Neto, Ryan Thompson and Allan Winans. Five players in the major leagues in one season is a new program record for Campbell.

Johnson joins former Camel Rube Melton (1941) in making his MLB debut with the Phillies.

You can watch Johnson's debut Sunday afternoon at 1:40 p.m. from LoanDepot Park in Miami.
