Bjelke T1, Camels finish 3rd at Palmetto

First career 1st-place finish for Camel senior

AIKEN, S.C. – Henric Bjelke tied for individual honors, to lead Campbell to a third place finish in the team standings after Tuesday's final round of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at Palmetto Golf Club.

In an event shortened to 36 holes by heavy rain Monday, No. 71 Clemson (289-274—563) won the team title at three-over on the par-70, 6617-yard Alister MacKenzie design.  Host USC Aiken, ranked No. 11 among Division II teams, finished second at 8-over, while No. 96 Campbell (292-279—571) was third at plus-11 in the 15-team field.

A senior from Norway, Bjelke (72-66—138) recorded his collegiate-low round (66) to finish 4-under for the day and share first-place honors at minus-two with Oscar Abrahamsson of USC Aiken (74-64—138).  Bjelke forced a playoff with a 15-foot putt for par on his final hole of the day.  However, Abrahamsson birdied the first playoff hole to claim medalist recognition.  Bjelke eclipsed his previous collegiate low score, a 4-under 67 last fall at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, and posted his fourth top 10 finish in seven starts this season.

Campbell sophomore Joachim Larsen Tegner (74-68—142) finished eighth to earn his fifth top 10 of the year, while fellow sophomore Erik Johansson placed T18 (73-75—148).  Freshman Benjamin Killingstad (73-77—150) tied for 25th and senior Douglas Nordlof finished T41 (82-70—152) while matching his low score as a Camel in Tuesday's play.

The Camels earned their third top 3 team finish in seven outings this season.  Campbell continues its schedule Mar. 21-23 in the Schenkel Invitational, hosted by Georgia Southern at Forest Heights CC in Statesboro, Ga.

The Course – Palmetto Golf Club (Par 70, 6617 yards)
The Palmetto Golf Club is the oldest, continually operated 18-hole golf course in its original location in the Southeast and probably the second oldest in the United States, with the Chicago Golf Club being the oldest. Palmetto Golf Club was founded in 1892 by Thomas Hitchcock, who laid out four holes.  After the first four holes were constructed, Herbert Leeds laid out the remainder of the initial nine holes. Palmetto was expanded in 1895 to 18 holes with the completion of the second nine holes that had been designed by Leeds and James Mackrell, Palmetto's first golf professional. There is a record of Donald Ross having done some work at Palmetto in 1928.  In 1932, Alister MacKenzie, who had completed the Augusta National Golf Club, was asked to draw up plans for converting the Palmetto sand greens to grass and lengthening the course.  In 2003, Tom Doak, a recognized authority on Dr. MacKenzie's work, provided recommendations to restore some of the MacKenzie design characteristics on the golf course. This work was completed in 2005 and mainly involved reworking the bunkers and expanding the greens out towards the existing mounds and slopes. Noted golf course architect Gil Hanse is now serving as resident architect for the Club.  The golf course is a par 71 layout and plays at 6,695 yards (par 70, 6617 hards for the Palmetto Intercollegiate) from the championship tees. What the course may lack in length it more than makes up for with its small elevated and undulating greens, and clever (some say diabolical) bunkers.
