Campbell meets Coastal Carolina in WNIT first round Thursday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell heads to Coastal Carolina for the first round of the WNIT on Thursday at 6 PM on ESPN+. 

A PROGRAM BUILT ON DEFENSE

  • Campbell is the only program in the nation to be ranked in the top-25 in scoring defense in each of the past eight seasons
  • In the Ronny Fisher era (since 2016-17) Campbell has held 42 opponents to 40 points or less and 109 opponents to 50 points or less
  • This season Campbell ranks:
    • 58th nationally and 3rd in the CAA in scoring defense (58.6 PPG allowed)
    • 100th nationally and 6th in the CAA in field goal percentage defense (39.0%)
    • 23rd nationally and 5th in the CAA giving up just 13.7 fouls per game
  • Last season Campbell ranked:
    • 8th nationally and 1st in the CAA in scoring defense (55.1 PPG allowed)
    • 31st nationally in field goal percentage defense (37.1%)
    • 10th nationally in three-point percentage defense (26.5%)
    • 23rd nationally giving up only 13.8 fouls per game

POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT HISTORY

  • Campbell is participating in its fourth postseason tournament overall under head coach Ronny Fisher (WBI in 2017 & 2019, WNIT in 2022)
  • The Camels earned its first postseason tournament win over Coastal Carolina in the 2019 WBI. Campbell would go on to reach the tournament semifinals after a win over Tennessee Tech before falling to Appalachian State
  • Campbell earned an automatic bid to the WNIT in 2022 after winning the Big South regular season title. The Camels, who tied the program record with 23 wins that season, fell to Liberty in the first round, 50-44

CAA POSTSEASON HONORS

20 WIN SEASON

  • For the fifth time in nine seasons (and for the first time since the 2021-22 season) under Coach Fisher, Campbell has reached 20 wins
  • Fisher has led the Camels to a program record 23 wins twice in 2018-19 and 2021-22

LAST TIME OUT

  • Third-seeded Campbell fell 66-63 to ninth-seeded William & Mary in the CAA Championship
  • Courtney Dahlquist led the Camels with 19 points, Gianni Boone added 15 points while Gemma Nunez finished with 13 points

  • Coastal Carolina holds a 23-8 record overall and reached the Sun Belt Tournament semifinals after finishing fourth in the conference standings
  • The Chanticleers rank 43rd nationally scoring 75.0 points per game and 21st nationally forcing 20.45 turnovers per game
  • Four Chants are scoring over 10 points a game led by Savannah Brooks (13.2 ppg) and Alancia Ramsey (12.4 ppg)

SERIES HISTORY

  • Campbell is 28-18 all-time in the series against Coastal Carolina dating back to 1987
  • The former Big South rivals last met in the 2019 WBI tournament first round, a 58-54 win for the Camels in Conway
  • Campbell has won five straight in the series. Coastal's last win came in the 2014-15 regular season, a 50-40 win over the Camels in Conway

  • Nunez enters Thursday's game tied for the most assists in single-season program history at 206 (Julie Skinner 1987-88)

  • Gemma Nunez ranks 9th nationally and 1st in the CAA averaging 6.2 assists overall and 49th nationally/2nd in the CAA with a 2.08 assist/turnover ratio
  • Additionally, Nunez ranks 104th nationally/5th in the CAA averaging 2.09 steals per game
  • Nunez is also averaging 8.0 points and ranks second on the team with 5.1 rebounds per game
  • Nunez is one of four players in the country to average 5.0 or more points, rebounds and assists along with more than 2.0 steals per game (Megan McConnell, Duquesne; Haven Ford, Murray St.; Ally Becki, Ball St.)
  • Nunez has dished out 10+ assists four times this season, including a career-high 12 at Stony Brook
  • She recorded her first career double-double with 11 pts and 11 assists against Monmouth and had her second double-double of the year with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a win at North Carolina A&T
  • Nunez has also dished out nine assists five times 
  • The Spaniard was named CAA Player of the Week (Feb. 9) after leading the Camels to wins over Northeastern and NC A&T

  • Freshman guard Jasmine Felton is ranks 2nd in the country shooting 69.0 percent (87-of-126) from two (min. 100+ attempts & excluding games against non Division-I teams)

CARDIAC CAMELS

  • Campbell has two double-digit fourth quarter comeback wins this season and four fourth-quarter comebacks by five points or more this season
  • The Camels trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half and erased a 13-point deficit to start the fourth quarter in a 71-67 overtime win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Nov. 27
  • Campbell erased a 13-point deficit with 6:13 remaining to defeat Towson on Feb. 28
  • Both wins are tied for the second-largest 4Q comeback in program history (15 pts at High Point, 2019-20)

WINNER, WINNER

  • Campbell has surpassed both its CAA win total (9) and overall win total (17) from last season
  • Five of Campbell's 10 CAA wins have been by 20 or more points including a 30-point win over Hampton and a 40-point win over Northeastern
  • The Camels won eight of its last 10 games to close out the regular season

  • Campbell's offense is ranked 2nd in the CAA, averaging 65.5 points per game
  • The Camels also rank 4th in the CAA shooting 41.1 percent overall, 3rd in the conference averaging 6.3 threes per game and 3rd with 22.5 bench points per game

  • Campbell leads the CAA and ranks 34th nationally giving up just 13.1 turnovers per game

HOME, SWEET HOME

  • Campbell posted a 12-2 record in home games this season, tied for the fifth-best mark in program Division-I history (since 1986-87)
  • The Camels outscored foes by 18.0 points at Gore Arena, shooting 42.8 percent from the field while holding foes to 35.9 percent shooting
  • Opposing teams averaged 18.6 turnovers and were outscored 259-160 overall in the fourth quarter
  • Campbell's 10-0 start at home this season matched the longest undefeated streak in the Ronny Fisher era along with the 2019-20 Big South regular season champion Camels who also started 10-0 and finished 12-2 at home
  • The Camels have won four CAA home games by 20 or more points including a 40-point win  (81-41) over Northeastern and a 30-point win (72-42) over Hampton

FIVE-GAME ROAD WIN STREAK

  • After starting 0-9 away from home, Campbell rattled off five straight road wins to close out the regular season
  • It marks the longest road win streak since the 2021-22 season
  • Campbell held foes to 55.4 points per game during the streak
  • Campbell became the only CAA team to defeat both North Carolina A&T and Drexel on its home floors this season

MULTIPLE 20-PLUS SCORERS

  • Four different Camels - Olivia Tucker, Courtney Dahlquist, Gianni Boone and Ciara Alexander - have scored 20 points or more this season
  • Tucker dropped 20-plus points in back-to-back games, scoring 24 (the most by a Camel this season) against ETSU while scoring 20 at Miami
  • Dahlquist dropped 20+ points in consecutive games during CAA play, scoring a career-high 21 points against Stony Brook and pouring in 20 points behind a career-best 6 three-pointers
  • The team's leading scorer, Gianni Boone has three 20-point outings this season
  • Boone has scored 21 points against Western Carolina and Stony Brook and dropped 20 points and added 10 boards against UNCW. Boone has scored in double-figures 15 times overall
  • Boone and Dahlquist became the first CU duo to each have 20 or more points in a game since Shy Tuelle (21) and Caroline Bowns (20) accomplished the feat against Hampton on March 14, 2019
  • Alexander became the latest Camel to score 20 points in a game, notching a career-best 20 points in 24 minutes off the bench against Northeastern. A freshman, Alexander made 7-of-11 field goals and went 6-of-7 from the charity stripe

TOP TRIO OF FRESHMEN

  • Campbell boasts the best trio of freshmen in the CAA in Olivia Tucker, Jasmine Felton and Ciara Alexander this season with all three earning CAA weekly honors multiple times. Felton and Alexander also both earned All-CAA Rookie Team honors
  • Olivia Tucker is one of the top scoring options for the Camels off the bench, averaging 8.2 points per game on the season
  • Tucker was named CAA Player of the Week after scoring 20+ points in consecutive games against ETSU (24) and Miami (20). The Durham, N.C. native has also earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors once this season as well
  • Jasmine Felton is a three-time CAA Rookie of the Week, averaging 8.8 points, a team-high 5.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals all while shooting a team-best 52.9 percent from the field
  • Ciara Alexander averages 8.8 points along with 4.8 boards - all while playing just 15.6 minutes off the bench
  • Alexander has scored in double-figures in 10 of 18 CAA games and has been named CAA Rookie of the Week twice

DAHLQUIST FROM DEEP

  • Senior forward Courtney Dahlquist ranks 3rd in the CAA shooting 37.4 percent from behind the arc
  • Her 64 threes this season ranks 4th in the CAA
  • Dahlquist scored a career-best 21 points in 27 minutes, connecting on 5-of-8 threes at Stony Brook
  • She followed up that game with another 20 point outing against Monmouth, making a career-high 6 three-pointers

HOMEGROWN TALENT

  • Campbell enters the 2024-25 season as one of six D-I programs without a transfer (from any level) on its roster for a second-straight season (Air Force, Brown, Cornell, Princeton, South Dakota St.)

HEAD COACH RONNY FISHER

  • A three-time Big South Coach of the Year, Ronny Fisher enters his ninth season at the helm of Campbell women's basketball and 17th as a head coach overall
  • Over the previous eight seasons, Campbell has won 152 games for an average of 19 wins per season (152-90)
  • Fisher enters the 2024-25 season with 249 career wins (249-234), which ranks 2nd most amongst active CAA coaches trailing only Charleston's Robin Harmony with 317 wins (317-183)
  • Under Fisher, the Camels claimed the 2019-20 and 2021-22 Big South regular season titles and finished as Big South tournament runners-up in 2019, 2021 and 2022 and CAA tournament runners-up in 2025
  • Fisher has also led Campbell to its first-ever WNIT berth in 2021-22 along with three other postseason appearances in the WBI (2017 & 2019) and an at-large bid to the WNIT in 2025. He helped the Camels claim their first ever postseason win in the 2019 WBI
