Camels finish 7th at Schenkel Invitational

Bjelke turns in top 20 finish

STATESBORO, GA. – Henric Bjelke tied for 19th place and Campbell finished 7th on the team leaderboard after Sunday's final round of the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights CC.
 
In a field that included eight teams ranked among the nation's top 100, No. 86 Campbell turned in its best finish in five trips to the event (293-289-286—868) and placed in front of power conference opponents Wisconsin, Indiana and Maryland.
 
No. 10 Utah (288-277-277—842) claimed team honors at 22-under par, one stroke better than No. 11 Florida (843).  Host Georgia Southern was third (848), while Kentucky and No. 36 Notre Dame finished at 5-under.  West Virginia (+2) finished two strokes ahead of the Camels.   
 
Luke Poulter of Florida won individual medalist honors at 8-under par (67-69-72—208), one shot ahead of teammate Ian Gilligan.
 
Bjelke turned in a 3-under 69 on Sunday and finished the event at 1-under 215 (73-73-69).  Erik Johansson (75-71-73—219) and Benjamin Killingstad (73-73-73—219) completed the 54-hole event at 3-over and tied for 31st, while Joachim Larsen Tegner (72-72-76—22) tied for 38th.  Douglas Nordlof moved up to a tie for 62nd place (78-76-71—225) after shooting a one-under 71 Sunday.
 
Johansson tied for the lead with 14 birdies, while Larsen Tegner made 13 and Bjelke 12.  Killingstad tied for fourth with 39 pars.
 
Named for Georgia Southern alum and hall of fame broadcaster Chris Schenkel, the Schenkel Invitational has been a proving ground for some of the game's best players with names like Jay Haas, Andy Bean, Jerry Pate, Andy North, Bob Tway, Scott Verplank, Curtis Strange, Hal Sutton, Mark Calcavecchia, Bill Haas, Billy Horschel, Bubba Watson and Justin Thomas.  Past Schenkel Invitational participants have gone on to win 17 majors, most recently Thomas at the 2017 and 2022 PGA Championships and 2023 Open Championship winner Brian Harman, and 354 PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions titles.
 
The Camels return to action at the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by East Carolina Mar. 28-30 at Cutter Creek CC in Snow Hill, N.C.

The Course: Forest Heights CC (Par 72, 7123 Yards)
Recognized as one of the finest courses in the Southeast, Forest Heights Country Club is host to the Schenkel Invitational, which draws top teams from around the country. Forest Heights is also the site of the annual Southeastern Amateur Golf tournament and has hosted the Southern Conference tournament and the Georgia State Golf Association Four-Ball tournament.  Opened in 1947, the greens were rebuilt to USGA specifications under the direction of Bob Cupp in 1993.
