Harrington to make MLB debut with Pittsburgh

BUIES CREEK - Thomas Harrington has been called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates to make his Major League debut tonight in Tampa Bay. Harrington is expected to be the starting pitcher.

Harrington, the No. 79 ranked prospect in baseball, and No. 3 in the Pirates organization, was a 2022 first-round draft pick, selected No. 36 overall in Competitive Balance Round A. He was the second-highest draft pick in program history, behind only Zach Neto, who was selected 13th in the same draft.

The Sanford, N.C. native spent two decorated seasons in The Creek, earning first-team all-America honors, Big South Pitcher of the Year, and Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors as a sophomore in 2022. He was a unanimous all-American by all outlets, and played his way to a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist. That year, he led the nation in wins as the only pitcher with 12, and set the program record for both wins and strikeouts (111). He owned the second-lowest ERA (2.53) and third-lowest WHIP (0.94) in the nation among pitchers with at least 90 innings pitched.

As a freshman, he was tabbed a Freshman All-American by numerous outlets, as well as Big South Freshman of the Year. His rookie season was highlighted by a complete game, one-hit shutout at USC Upstate, retiring the final 22 batters he faced.

Harrington finished his Campbell career with a dazzling 18-5 record, 2.94 ERA, 186 strikeouts and 26 walks.

Through two minor league seasons, the righty has made 47 starts with a 14-9 record, 3.09 ERA, 261 strikeouts and just 60 walks.

Harrington becomes the 15th Camel to reach The Show, and will be the fourth on MLB rosters this season joining Neto (LAA), Cedric Mullins (BAL), and Ryan Thompson (ARI). He is also the sixth player to suit up in the big leagues in the last two seasons, with Alan Winans and Seth Johnson also having made their debuts last year.

Harrington will be the first Camel to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

First pitch is at 7:05 tonight at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa Bay.
