Bjelke, Camels in lead at CAA Championship

Senior sets collegiate low, ties course record with 7-under 65

SWAINTON, N.J. – Henric Bjelke tied the course record with a 7-under 65 and Campbell is tied with Delaware on top of the team leader board after Sunday's opening round of the Coastal Athletic Association men's golf championship at Union League National Golf Club.

A senior from Oslo, Norway, Bjelke set a collegiate low on a bogey-free day when he birdied four of his last five holes.  He stands three shots ahead of Delaware's Casper Nerpin heading into Monday's second round.  The 54-hole stroke play event continues Tuesday to determine the CAA's automatic bid in the NCAA regional championships (May 12-14).

No. 88 Campbell and Delaware both finished the day 4-over (292) and share a one-shot lead over top-seed and 58th-ranked Charleston (293).  Elon (295) is fourth, while UNCW (301) and Drexel (301) are tied for fifth in the 11-team standings.

On a day when only four players in the 55-golfer field finished in red numbers, Bjelke's score marked just the seventh time in CAA tournament history that a player has shot 65, or better.  Scott Polen set the league record with an 8-under 64 in the 2000 championship and that mark was equaled by Ted Brown of VCU in 2002 and Charleston's Christian Baliker in 2021.

Campbell freshman Benjamin Killingstad is tied for fifth at even-par 72.  A freshman from Blommenholm, Norway, Killingstad closed his round with birdies on the par-four 17th and par-five 18th holes.  Joachim Larsen Tegner is tied for T17 (75), while Erik Johansson is T38 (80).  Logan Graf stands T49 (82) in the 55-player field.

As a team, the Camels lead the field in par-3 (3.25) and par-5 (-6) scoring in addition to birdies (22).  Bjelke tops the field in birdies (7) and par-4 scoring (-4), is tied for second on the par-5 holes and T4 on the par-3 layouts.  Killingstad ranks T2 with 6 birdies and Johannson T6 (4).

Campbell will be paired with Delaware and Charleston for Monday's second round and start from the first tee at 11:00 a.m.  Live scoring is available at Scoreboard.clippd.com.

The backbone of this super-maximalist design from Dana Fry and Jason Straka in the South New Jersey cape are a pair of constructed 40-foot-high central ridges that half of the complex's 27 holes scramble up and down. The design is a head-spinning presentation of three different nines that show off electrified putting surfaces stuffed with all manner of tiers, baubles and side slopes, big sandy dunes, scrubby barrens, cavernous bunkers, a section on the north end that mimics holes forged from a quarry and a kaleidoscope of native New Jersey vegetation. The new Union League National earned second-place honors in the 2022 Golf Digest Best New private award.
