Camels set for Queens Fall Classic

BUIES CREEK - The Camels will look to continue their strong start to the season this weekend at the Queens Fall Classic. Campbell squares off with UNC Asheville, The Citadel, and Queens during the two-day event.

Hot Start
With a 4-2 record, Campbell is off to its best start to non-conference play since 2017 when the Camels started 5-1. The 2017 team went on to finish 20-12 and earned a trip to the NIVC. 

Series History
The Camels are 13-21 all-time against UNC Asheville, but have had the upper hand lately. Campbell has won eight straight against the Bulldogs going back to 2019, with all of those meetings as Big South foes. 

The Camels are 5-1 against Queens and winners of five in a row in the series. The sides met last season in a match that went down to the wire with Campbell taking it in five sets. 

Campbell and The Citadel have met only four times, with the Camels owning a 3-1 record. The teams met in 2022 in a three-set victory for The Citadel. 

About The Field
UNC Asheville carries a 1-6 record into the weekend with the lone win coming at home over West Georgia. Kylie Cackovic has been the team's top producer on offense with 88 kills, while Thao Michelle handles libero duties with 115 digs, good for top 30 in the country so far. UNC Asheville was picked to finish fourth in the Big South preseason poll.

Queens boasts a 5-2 record, most recently going 2-1 at the Georgia State Invitational. Among common opponents with CU thus far, Queens fell to UNCG in four sets and beat Gardner-Webb in four set. The Royals own some impressive numbers, ranking seventh nationally in digs, 11th in blocks, and 12th in kills. Emma Norris is seventh in the country in blocks with 38 thus far. Queens was picked to finish 11th in the ASUN. 

The Citadel remains in search of its first win this weekend, sitting at 0-5 on the year. Savannah Freeman and Sammie Sabra pace the attack with 37 and 30 kills each. The Citadel was picked to finish seventh in the SoCon this season.

Last Time Out
Campbell swept its home tournament for the first time since 2019, defeating Gardner-Webb, Norfolk State, and UNCG in the process. Maja Daca shined with 47 kills and 12 aces in the event to earn tournament MVP followed by CAA Player of the Week. Bella Illig's 60 digs, highlighed by 33 digs against Gardner-Webb, helped land her on the all-tournament team as well. 

Looking Ahead
Campbell will round out non-conference play next weekend in Evanston, Ill. against St. Thomas and Northwestern.
