Four Camels earn Preseason All-CAA honors

BUIES CREEK – Campbell baseball tabbed four players on the CAA preseason all-conference team as announced by the league on Wednesday afternoon. 

Infielder Joey Morton, outfielder Joe Simpson, and utility Jett Music were named to the preseason squad and left-handed pitcher Lleyton Grubich was named honorable mention.  

Morton earned first team All-CAA after starting all but three games at first base last season. The Oxford, Pa., native led the team with 13 home runs and four triples in 53 games. He posted a .289 batting average including 55 hits and 42 runs driven in. Morton finished second in the league with four triples and top-10 in slugging percentage and home runs. 

Simpson was named second team all-conference last season after leading the Camels with a .345 batting average and 1.047 OPS in 46 games. The Clinton, Iowa, native led the squad in slugging percentage (.608) and tied for the team lead with 21 stolen bases. The outfielder tallied 15 multi-hit performances and did not commit an error last season. 

Music earned a spot on the preseason squad after being named to the All-Rookie team last season. The now sophomore saw time in the infield, outfield, and on the mound a season ago. Music played in 46 games making 35 starts while also making 18 appearances on the mound. The Clayton, N.C., native batted .283 including 11 extra-base hits and 10 RBI. He compiled a 2-2 record with one save and a 7.88 ERA. He struck out 36 batters in 24.0 innings of work and tallied a strike out in all but three appearances.  

Grubich led the Campbell pitching staff last season with a 4.26 ERA in 18 appearances. The left-hander tossed 44.1 innings and tallied 29 strikeouts finishing with a 2-3 record. He collected two saves on the season and held opponents to a .269 batting average. The McHenry, Ill., native registered a strikeout in all but two appearances and did not allow a run in six appearances.

The Camels were selected to finish third in the south division after receiving a first-place vote for a total of 18 points.
