Camels return to CAA action at Towson

BUIES CREEK — Campbell baseball returns to CAA action traveling to Towson for a three-game set at John B. Schuerholz Park Mar. 20-22.

All three games will be streamed on FloCollege.

LAST TIME OUT 
  • Campbell picked up its first ranked win of the season in walk off fashion against No. 16 Coastal Carolina on Wednesday in Buies Creek. 
  • Mike Murphy drove in the game-winning run on an RBI single to center field to score pinch runner Lukas Schramm in the ninth. Prior to Murphy's at-bat both squads were 0-for-23 with runners in scoring position. 
  • The pitching staff limited the Chanticleers to just one hit on the night and struck out 14. 
  • Additionally, Campbell defeated Duke in run-rule fashion, 13-3 (8), on Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium. 
  • The Camels used a six-run fifth inning and scored in six of the eight innings to power past the Blue Devils. The Camels collected 13 hits in the contest with four recording multi-hit performances. 
  • On the weekend, Campbell picked up a CAA series victory over North Carolina A&T after taking two of the three from the Aggies. The series marks the second straight series win after opening conference play with a series win over William & Mary. 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Campbell and Towson meet for the 19th time in program history on Friday afternoon. 
  • Campbell leads the overall series, 10-8. 
  • The Camels took a pair last season and outscored the Tigers 21-8 over three games. 
  • The series dates back to April 17, 1979 when Towson defeated the Camels, 9-3 in Buies Creek.

AYE AYE CHAPMAN
  • Junior infielder Logan Chapman has been on a tear at the plate for the Camels and leads the offense in batting average (.407), slugging percentage (.685) and on-base percentage (.467). 
  • Chapman went 4-for-4 with a home run, double, and four runs scored in Tuesday night's win over Duke before going 2-for-4 against #16 Coastal Carolina. 
  • He has a six-game multi-hit streak and has reached base in 15 straight games. 
  • Chapman leads the conference in OPS (1.152) and is second in slugging percentage while his batting average is sixth-best in the CAA. 
ONE HITTER
  • The Campbell pitching staff allowed just one hit against #16 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday. 
  • The staff allowed the fewest hits in a single game since the Camels 8-0 victory on May 15, 2021 against USC Upstate. 
EARLY AND OFTEN
  • Campbell has scored in the first inning in seven games this season for a 6-1 record. 
  • The Camels have scored first in 10 games this season and are 9-1. 
THE ROOKIE
  • Freshman outfielder Carlos Lugo was tabbed CAA Rookie of the Week as announced by the league on Monday afternoon. 
  • Lugo led the Camels offensively with a .588 average tallying 10 hits in 17 at-bats on the week including two for extra bases. He also registered two RBI, two walks, and a team-high eight runs scored. 
  • Lugo collected a multi-hit performance in each contest this week including going 3-for-4 with a double, homer, two RBIs and three runs in a 10-0 win over NC A&T. 
  • Lugo opened the scoring in game two of the series with NC A&T launching his first collegiate homer which would be all the Camels would need to secure the victory, 10-0 (7).
DEALING DAVE
  • Right-handed pitcher David Rossow was stellar in his start against NC A&T on Saturday. The redshirt senior picked up his third win of the season after going a career-long 6.1 innings and picking up a career-high 13 strikeouts.
SIMPSON SWIPES
  • Simpson tied the single game program record with five stolen bases in Sunday's matchup with William & Mary (3/8). 
  • The Clinton, Iowa native, has reached base in 12 straight games has a team-high 15 stolen bases. 
100 CLUB
  • Redshirt junior Andy Schuldt tallied his 100th career RBI and run scored over the weekend against North Carolina A&T. 
  • The Cornelius, N.C., native reached the 100 career hits marker last season against NC A&T on May 2. 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
  • Towson comes into the weekend with a 6-10 overall record and a 0-6 start to CAA play. 
  • Brian Heckelman leads the offense with a .333 batting average including 21 hits, three doubles, and four homers. Heckelman has driven in 12 runs and is slugging .571. 
  • Liam Diehl leads the pitching staff with a 2.78 ERA in five starts. Diehl has a team-high 22.2 innings pitched and has allowed seven runs on 22 hits and is second on the team with 26 strikeouts. 
  • Towson was picked to finish fourth in the North Division.
NO FREEBIES
  • The Campbell pitching staff ranks 35th in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio out of the 300 ranked DI schools. The Camels post a 2.85 for second in the CAA. Auburn leads the country with a 5.34 ratio. 
  • The staff also ranks 56th in the nation in walks allowed per nine innings with a mark of 3.77.

  • Campbell's four-game road swing continues traveling to #10 NC State on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Doak Field and it will be streamed on ACCNX.
