Camels one shot off lead after first day of CAA

Johansson, Sundborn, Larsen Tegner in top 9

ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – With three golfers among the top nine individuals, Campbell is one shot off the team lead after Sunday's opening round of the CAA men's championship at the Dataw Island Club – Cotton Dike course.

Erik Johansson (-5) is tied for second, William Sundborn (-4) T4th and Joachim Larsen Tegner (-3) T9th through 18 holes of the 3-day event.

Top-seeded and 43rd-ranked UNCW finished the day 12-under (276), one shot clear of the fourth-seeded Camels and two in front of eight-seed Towson (278).  No. 77 and third-seed Elon is fourth (280), one stroke better than second seed and 47th-ranked Charleston (281).

The Camels combined to make 25 birdies and two eagles on the par-72 Cotton Dike course designed by Tom Fazio.  CU's 11-under 277 Sunday marked its best round in league championship play since joining the CAA in the 2023-24 season.

UNCW's James Rico shot a 6-under 66 on Sunday and holds a one-stroke edge over Johansson and Ariijau Faana of Towson.  Sundborn is in a 5-way tie for fourth place at minus-four 68.

Johansson's 5-under 67 stands as the second-lowest round by a Camel player in CAA competition behind only Henric Bjelke's 7-under 65 in the 2025 opening around at Union League National.  A junior from Hollviken, Sweden, Johansson eagled the par-5 third hole and added five birdies, including one on the par-five 18th.

Sundborn, a freshman from Oslo, Norway, drove the green on the 309-yard opening hole and made a 15-foot eagle putt to start his round.  He added four more birdies.

Larsen Tegner played his final 10 holes 4-under to finish the day at minus-3.  A junior from Lier, Norway, Larsen Tegner's round included six birdies.

Sophomore Benjamin Killingstad finished the round at one-over 73 and is tied for 29th, while red-shirt junior Logan Graf finished strong after a round start.  Graf was 12-over through 10 holes, but made three birdies over the last holes to shoot even on the back-nine, 9-over for the round.

Campbell, which entered the event ranked No. 104 in the nation, will be paired with UNCW and Towson for Monday's second round and start from the first tee at 11:30 a.m.  Live scoring is available at Scoreboard.clippd.com.

The CAA champion will receive the league's automatic berth in the NCAA regionals, which will be held May 18-20.
