Camels headed back to Cameron Indoor Stadium

Campbell and Duke will meet Dec. 15 in Durham

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell will travel to Durham on Tuesday, Dec. 15 to take on Duke – just a few months before the 35th anniversary of the teams facing off in the 1992 NCAA tournament.

The meeting will be the fourth overall between the Camels and Blue Devils on the hardwood and the first since Nov. 13, 2021, when No. 9 Duke held off an upset-minded Campbell squad 67-56.

Campbell's contest at Duke will mark the seventh-consecutive season that Campbell has faced an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent.  CU traveled to NC State in the '20-21 and '22-23 campaigns, played at Duke in '21-22, at Virginia Tech in '23-24, at North Carolina in '24-25, and last season traveled to Wake Forest.

The Blue Devils defeated the Camels 82-56 on Mar. 19, 1992 in the NCAA tournament first round at the Greensboro Coliseum on the way to a second-straight national title.  Christian Laettner led Duke with 22 points, while Mark Mocnik scored a game-high 29, including 7-of-13 threes, for the Camels.  That 1992 Duke team included eight future NBA draft picks, including first round choices Laettner ('92), Bobby Hurley ('93), Grant Hill ('94) and Cherokee Parks ('95).

On Jan. 13, 1997, Duke defeated the Camels 84-59 at Durham. Jim Fitzpatrick (19) and Corey Best (14) hit double figures for the Camels, while Greg Newton led Duke with 14.  The '96-97 Duke roster included Chris Carrawell, Steve Wojciechoski, Jeff Capel and Nate James.

On Nov. 13, 2021, the Blue Devils hung on for a 67-56 win over the Camels at Cameron Indoor Stadium.  Paolo Banchero scored 18 points to lead Duke, which trailed by 10 early.  Cedric Henderson, Jr. scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Ricky Clemons finished with 18 points for the Camels, who trailed by just six with 7:13 to play.  Jesus Carralero added 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Camels, who out-rebounded a Duke team 34-31 that started two players 6-foot-10 or taller.

The Camels own a 1-40 all-time record vs. current ACC members with the lone victory coming at NC State on Dec. 4, 1993 in a 72-69 OT decision at Reynolds Coliseum.

Campbell's connection with Duke includes Bob Vernon, who earned JUCO All-America honors at Campbell in 1956, went on to letter at Duke ('57-58) and later won 418 games at Kennedy High School to rank as one of all-time winningest coaches in New Jersey prep history.  He was a 1986 inductee into the Campbell Sports Hall of Fame.
