CREEK,
N.C. - Richard Jata scored once and set up the game-winner and
Campbell defeated Jacksonville 3-1 Thursday night in Atlantic Sun
Conference men's soccer action at the Eakes Athletic
Complex.
Campbell (5-5-1, 1-1-1) improved to 4-0-0 at home this year. Jata,
a sophomore from Port Richey, Fla., has scored in each of those
contests. Jacksonville (3-7-1, 1-1-0), which entered the game as
the top scoring team in the conference, was able to only muster
one, first-half goal.
Both teams created opportunities early in the first half.
Jacksonville's Stefan Lindholm missed just over the bar with a
left-footed shot from 20 yards in the eighth
minute.
In the 11th minute, Campbell's Julian Fulton just missed wide left
on a near-post header off Austin Skakle's
service.
After 17 minutes, Anton Axelsson collected a poor Campbell
clearance and forced keeper Aaron Johnson to dive and tip his shot
over the bar.
Jata put the Camels in front in the 20th minute with his sixth
strike of the year, a right-footed direct kick from about 20 yards
that sailed just by teammate Willy Guadarrama's head on the right
side of the wall.
After the goal, Jacksonville's Tommy Krizanovic, who entered the
week as the nation's top goal scorer with 12 strikes in 10 outings,
left the game and did not return.
However, the Dolphins equalized just 36 seconds later when Anton
Axelsson hit the right post with a shot and Ramak Niakan Safi
netted the rebound for his first goal.
In the first three minutes of the second half, Jacksonville nearly
broke in front when Bojan Milicevic shot from the top of the area
missed just wide left.
Campbell broke in front in the 51st minute when Vince Petrasso shot
from outside the box and JU keeper Chad Comroe had to dive to tip
the deflected attempt over the crossbar for a corner. On the
ensuing kick, Stephen Oyuga nodded home Jata's service for his
second goal of the season.
Guadarrama was stopped by Comroe from point-blank range at the near
post in the 58th minute before he set up Josh Elliott for an
insurance marker three minutes later. Guadarrama dribbled down the
left flank and squared the ball across the top of the area to
Elliott, who found the net for his first goal of the
season.
In the 65th minute, Comroe
saved Alex Bruemmer's one-on-one shot. Eleven minutes later,
Jata's dipping shot beat the keeper, but bounded off the
crossbar.
Jacksonville's best chance to pull closer came in the 77th minute
on Andrew Vassilo's shot that beat keeper Aaron Johnson, but was
cleared off the line by Camel defender Michael
Hutchison.
Campbell held a 17-10 edge in shots, including an 11-6 margin in
the second half. Johnson finished with three saves and lowered his
goals-against average to 1.34, second-best in the league. Comroe
had five stops for the Dolphins.
The Camels, who play five of their next six opponents at home, have
outscored their foes by an 11-4 edge this season at the Eakes
Complex.
Campbell continues its three-match
home stand on Saturday in a 4:30 p.m. kick-off against North
Florida. Jacksonville travels to Gardner-Webb on Saturday for a
1:00 p.m. start.
