Two-Out Hitting, Big Innings Propel 49ers Past Camels 8-0

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Spencer Steedley missed Campbell bats all afternoon, as he threw a complete game shut-out to give Charlotte (3-1) an 8-0 victory and two-game sweep of Campbell (0-2) Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field.

Steedley picked up his first win of the young season in impressive fashion, allowing only seven hits and striking out 13 Campbell batters, which nearly doubled his previous career high of seven. In the two-game set, the Charlotte pitching staff accumulated 28 strikeouts compared to the Camel's six.

Charlotte's clutch two-out hitting gave the 49ers the early lead. Quinn LeSage started the second inning by walking the first two batters, but recorded two quick outs after a line drive back to the mound resulted in catching Charlotte's Chris Taylor off second for a double play. The Niners then countered with four straight two-out hits, as Kris Rochelle started the rally by shooting a base-hit to left field. Chris Lane then followed with a two-RBI triple and was then driven in by his brother Cory to supply Charlotte with a 3-0 lead.

Charlotte's Cory and Chris Lane, who are identical twins, provided an afternoon of frustration for the Campbell staff. The two combined to go 6-9 with four RBI on the day batting in the leadoff and nine holes respectively.

Charlotte received two more two-out runs in the fifth inning. LeSage quickly retired the first two batters of the inning, but plunked Brad McElroy on an 0-2 pitch to give the 49ers life. Chris Taylor followed by sending LeSage's next pitch over the left field wall to extend the Charlotte lead to 5-0.

Carlton Floyd and Brandon Scott provided a majority of what little offense the Camels had. The two combined for five of the team's seven hits, as Floyd went 2-4 for the second consecutive day, and Scott rebounded from an 0-4 day Friday to collect three hits in four at-bats. Campbell only recorded consecutive hits once in the game and did not advance a runner past second base.

Charlotte
added three insurance runs in the ninth inning off Campbell reliever Chris England. Chris Lane and McElroy added RBI singles and Steedley added an RBI sac-fly to his impressive days work on the mound.

Charlotte
returns for their home opener Tuesday against Virginia Tech while Campbell continues its six-game, season-opening homestand against Charleston Southern. First pitch at Taylor Field Tuesday is scheduled for 3:00.
