BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Alan DeRatt
pitched 7.2 innings of five-hit baseball, and five Asheville
players recorded multi-hit games, as UNC Asheville (1-3) notched
its first win of the season over Campbell 6-1 at Taylor Field on
Friday.
DeRatt forced the Camel hitters to put the ball in play throughout
the day, as the junior did not allow a walk and only struck out one
over seven-plus innings of work. DeRatt found his rhythm from the
start, facing the minimum amount of Camel batters through five
innings, allowing only two hits.
The Bulldog's big first inning is all they would need in support
of DeRatt. Six of the first seven Bulldog batters singled to plate
three runs off of Campbell starter Quinn LeSage. Asheville had
LeSage's number early, as they rapped out eight hits in the first
three innings. However, LeSage would settle down, allowing zero
hits over a stretch of 17 UNCA batters from the third through
eighth innings.
The Camels struck for their only run of the game in the sixth
inning. Bryan Braswell led off the inning with a single, and later
advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt by DeRatt. Daniel
Smith then tried to bunt Braswell to third, but Asheville caught
Braswell in a rundown, allowing Smith to advance to second. A Jacob
Allen single put runners at first and third for Carlton Floyd, who
drove in Smith with a sacrifice fly to left field, pulling the
Camels to within 3-1.
Asheville quickly killed the Camel momentum by getting the run
back in the top of the seventh inning. After the lead-off man was
retired, Kevin Mattison was hit by a Quinn LeSage fastball.
Mattison proceeded to steal second base two pitches later, but was
caught with too large of a secondary lead between second and third
in that same at-bat. Catcher Bryan Braswell threw to second to pick
Mattison off, but his throw got by shortstop Jacob Allen, allowing
Mattison to score on the error.
UNCA plated two more insurance runs in the eighth. The Bulldogs had
men on first and second with one out, as a David Williams ground
ball looked to be an inning ending double play. However, Allen's
throw from second sailed into the Asheville dugout allowing the
fifth Bulldog run. Two batters later Steve Burnich singled to drive
in Williams, providing the final 6-1 margin.
Ryan Hamme paced the Camels at the plate, going 2-4 on the day.
Zach Johnson gave the Camels their first extra-base hit of the
season with his double in the ninth, and Floyd added the lone Camel
RBI of the day.
Campbell had another rough go of it defensively, as the Camels
committed four errors. In three games this season, CU has committed
eight errors and has allowed six unearned runs.
The Bulldogs and Camels will finish their three-game set with a
doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch for game one is scheduled for
12:00 with game two to follow approximately 20 minutes after the
first game
