UNC Asheville Sweeps Twinbill and Series from Campbell, Winning 10-8 and 5-3 Saturday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – UNC Asheville completed the series sweep of Campbell, benefiting from seven Camel errors and eight unearned runs on the day, as the Bulldogs (3-3) took two from the Camels (0-5) Saturday afternoon by the scores of 10-8 and 5-3 at Taylor Field.

In game one, Michael Bogaert (1-0) pitched 2.1 innings of relief, giving up two earned runs on four hits to get his first win of the season. Blake Herring dropped to 0-2, allowing four earned runs in five innings of work. Ben Buchanan pitched the eighth and ninth innings to record his first save of the year for Asheville, and Todd Matthews added his first career home run in the seventh for Campbell.

In game two Campbell out-hit the Bulldogs 10-7, but Asheville starter Graham Baughn (1-1) was solid through seven innings, allowing one earned run and scattering seven hits, to lead Asheville to the 5-3 victory. The Camel defense had three errors, giving up two unearned runs, as Chris England (0-1) took the loss on the hill for CU. Brandon Scott, Rob Lyerly and Ryan Hamme all went 2-4 and Matthews added his second home run of the day for the Camels.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Herring in game one. Matt Henson started the rally, reaching second on an error by pitcher Blake Herring. Elliot Arrington followed with a base hit, moving Henson to third, and Rob Vernon safety squeezed in the first run for Asheville. After a sacrifice bunt, Edmond Locklear knocked two of his six RBI's with a two-out single to put the Bulldogs up 3-0
Locklear had a monster first game for the Bulldogs, going 3-4 with two doubles and six RBI. The first six players in the UNCA lineup did nearly all of the damage offensively as they accounted for every run and RBI and all but one hit.

Campbell came right back in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score at 3-3. Carlton Floyd and Zach Johnson singled and Scott moved them over with a sacrifice bunt. After Hamme was hit by a pitch, Matthews fouled out, leaving it up to Mike Causey with two outs. Causey delivered, knocking a two-RBI single to center. Hamme scored all the way from first on the play, as center fielder Kevin Mattison let the ball get under his glove.

After Campbell took a 5-3 lead in the fourth inning, Asheville rallied for four runs in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. Herring retired eight Bulldogs in a row before allowing six straight Asheville hits, the biggest being Locklear's second two-RBI double. The Camels would however get the run back in the bottom half to cut the lead to 7-6.

UNCA expanded its lead in the seventh inning courtesy of Locklear. A walk, an error and a sacrifice bunt led to Locklear poking a two-RBI single up the middle to extend the Bulldog lead to 9-6. Matthews, however, would answer in the bottom half for the Camels, as he belted his first career home run to cut the Asheville lead to 9-8.

The Camels were robbed of an opportunity to tie the game in the eighth inning by first baseman Elliot Arrington. With two on and two out, Arrington made a diving play to his right on a Hamme groundball to preserve the one-run lead. The Bulldogs then pushed an insurance run across in the ninth, and Ben Buchanan set the Camels down in the ninth for his first save, and a 10-8 Bulldog victory.
Johnson, Floyd and Jacob Allen all had three hits in game one, providing nine of the 12 Camel hits. Causey and Matthews also added two RBI apiece.

In game two, the Bulldogs took the lead in the third inning by playing small ball. After a lead-off walk to David Williams and an England throwing error on John Whited's bunt, Justin Schumer squeezed in Williams on a bunt up the first base line for a 1-0 Asheville lead.
Asheville struck for two more in the fourth. Rob Vernon punched a one-out single to left, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Kyle Smith, Campbell's tormenter Locklear stroked another RBI double to put the Bulldogs up 3-0. It was Locklear's only hit of the game, who went 6-14 with 8 RBI and three doubles over the three game set.

In the seventh, the Bulldogs strung together a hit batsman and two singles with two outs to give them a 4-0 cushion. Campbell would answer with its first run of the game in bottom half on Matthew's second home run of the day.
Campbell countered with a two-out rally of its own in the bottom of the eighth. Johnson reached on a Schumer error and Scott drove him in with an RBI double. After Matt Gardner was sent in to pinch run, Ryan Hamme singled to right field, scoring Gardner and pulling CU within one at 4-3.

One run was as close as it would get, as UNCA would add an insurance run in the ninth to close out the scoring at 5-3. Schumer shook off a one-out Lyerly single by striking out the next two Camel batters, to earn his first save and preserve a series sweep for Asheville.

Campbell
will take to the road for its next four games beginning Wednesday when they travel to East Carolina for a 3:00 mid-week game. Asheville will be in Boling Springs, N.C. Tuesday to face Gardner-Webb.
