CHARLESTON, S.C. - The
Citadel (6-4) used 13 unanswered runs in the third, fourth and
fifth innings to muscle its way past Campbell (1-8) 20-10 at Joseph
P. Riley Park Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldog lineup banged out 25
hits on the day, with seven of the nine starters recording a
multi-hit day.
Five different Bulldogs set or tied career highs in offensive
categories. Zach Brown (hits and RBI), Sonny Meade (hits), Kyle
Jordan (hits, runs and RBI), Richard Jones (hits and RBI) and Matt
Arnold (hits and runs) all turned in career days in several
offensive areas.
Justin Smith (2-0) picked up his second win of the season allowing
three earned runs on five hits while striking out four and walking
three. Chris England (0-3) was tagged with his second loss in as
many games for CU. He lasted only two-thirds of an inning, allowing
four runs (two earned) on four hits, striking out one.
The Citadel erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the third,
sending 12 men to the plate. Matt Martinez came on in relief of
starter Blake Herring and fanned the leadoff batter, but allowed
five straight Bulldogs to reach base after that. Three singles, a
double and an error plated three runs and chased Martinez from the
game. Chris England took the hill next, but four of the next five
Bulldogs reached with singles, with Jones' two-RBI base hit being
the big blow.
The Bulldogs nearly batted around for the second straight inning in
the fourth. Jared Lehman started the inning by retiring lead-off
batter Chris Swauger, but Meade singled and Brown doubled him in
for the first run of the inning. After another single, Brandon
Scott was brought in to relieve Lehman, but was greeted by a Matt
Arnold RBI double. After a Jones strike out, Chris McGuinness
plated the last two runs of the inning with a two-RBI single,
putting the Bulldogs up 12-5.
The Camels got out to a quick lead, scoring five unanswered runs in
the first three innings. Smith had control issues early, as he
walked Carlton Floyd on four pitches to start the game. After a
Scott fielder's choice, Ryan Hamme singled to right, sending Scott
to third. Robb Meng came up next and knocked Scott in with a
groundout to the third baseman, getting Campbell the early 1-0
lead.
Smith's control struggles continued into the second inning. After
retiring two of the first three Camel batters, Smith walked Jacob
Allen and Floyd to load the bases with two outs. With a full count
and two outs to Scott, the runners were in motion, as Scott's
infield single was good for two runs, putting the Camels up
3-0.
Campbell added to its lead in the third. Meng was hit by a pitch to
start the inning, and after a Rob Lyerly lineout, Meng advanced to
third on a Mike Causey single to right. Causey stole second on as
Zach Johnson struck out, bringing up Bryan Braswell. Braswell
lofted what looked to be an inning ending fly ball to shallow
center, but second baseman Bryan Altman called off center fielder
Graham Couch but dropped the ball, letting the fourth and fifth
Campbell runs score.
The Citadel plated a single run in the fifth to extend the lead to
13-5, but Campbell pulled within five by scoring three in the
sixth. Johnson led off with a single and Todd Matthews followed
with a walk. After a Jacob Allen strike out, Floyd plated Johnson
with an RBI single, moving Matthews up to third. Scott came up
next, knocking in the second run of the inning on a fielder's
choice. Ryan Hamme then singled, putting runners on first and
second for pinch hitter John Watlington. His groundball got by
Altman, plating Scott for the third run of the inning.
That would be as close as the Camels would get, as the Bulldogs
scored three in the sixth and four in the seventh to build a 12-run
lead. The ninth inning would see two CU freshmen score their first
career runs, as Andrew Caron and Blake Lowry both crossed the plate
for the first time in their collegiate careers.
Hamme led the way offensively for CU, going 3-6. Floyd and Johnson
both had two hits on the day as Floyd went 2-4 with two RBI and
Johnson was 2-3 with two runs scored.
It was the largest scoring output of the season for the Camels, who
had scored just seven runs in their previous four games combined.
The 20 runs was the most given up by a Camel team since 2004 when
CU gave up 20 at the College of Charleston.
The combined 30 runs was only the third most in a game in the last
six years for Campbell. CU defeated Radford 32-5 in 2001 and topped
Ohio 18-17 in 2005.
The Citadel travels to Minneapolis, Minn. this Friday to face
Minnesota, Arkansas and Ole Miss at the Dairy Queen Classic.
Campbell returns home to Taylor Field Friday for a three-game
series with Seton Hall. First pitch for Friday's Camel-Pirate
doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00.
