In game one Boone Webster (5-1) picked up
the win, pitching 7.0 innings, scattering six hits and allowing
just two earned runs, retiring 14 Camels in a row at one point.
Brandon Scott (0-1) took his first lost of the year, pitching just
4.2 innings and allowing six runs, three of which were earned.
Game two saw Justin Boyette (3-2) pick up
the win for Mercer. Boyette went six innings, allowing two earned
runs and striking out seven Campbell batters. Quinn LeSage (0-5)
took the loss for CU, lasting only one inning in giving up seven
runs, only two of which were earned.
Brandon York continued his hot hitting by
going 2-4 with an RBI in game one. Ryan Hamme accounted for the
other Camel RBI in game two. Mike Armstrong led the Bears in game
one, poking three hits off of Camel pitching. John Dortch and Billy
Shaughnessy both added two hits with Shaughnessy adding two
RBIs.
The long ball accounted for most of the
scoring in game two as Josh Thompson and Jason Lowey both hit
three-run homers in the first inning for Mercer. Andrew Einert also
belted a two-run home run in the sixth. Hamme and Jacob Allen hit
their third and first home runs on the year respectively for the
Camels.
In game one, Mercer jumped out to a 3-0
lead in the third inning via three two-out runs. After Scott
retired the first two, Michael Langley walked, Eric Renfroe doubled
and Shaughnessy followed with another double to knock in two runs.
Shaughnessy then came around on Thompson's line drive that was
mishandled by center fielder Carlton Floyd to plate the third Bear
run of the inning.
Mercer stuck two unearned runs on the
scoreboard in the fourth. Armstrong led off the inning with a
single and moved to third on a Robb Meng error. Dortch continued to
terrorize CU pitching as the junior slapped an RBI single to left
to bring in Armstrong for the first run of the inning. Karwatt then
hustled home on a Scott wild pitch to make it 5-0.
The Bears added a single run in the fifth
to make it 6-0. With men on first and second and two outs,
Armstrong connected for his second hit of the game, driving in
Renfroe from second for Mercer's third run of the game with two
outs. MU made it 7-0 in the sixth as Langley brought in Dortch with
a sacrifice fly.
Campbell opened the seventh with
back-to-back doubles by Jacob Allen and Hamme to plate its first
run of the game. York followed with a single to bring in Hamme to
cut the Mercer lead to five at 7-2. The Bears would add a single
run in the bottom of the eighth to provide the final 8-2
margin.
In game two, CU took its first lead of
the series in the first inning as Hamme blasted a two-out solo home
run to left field, to put the Camels up 1-0. The Bears roared back
in the bottom half, however, as Mercer used three-run homers from
Thompson and Jason Lowey to go along with a Renfroe RBI double to
take a 7-1 lead.
Campbell put a small dent in the Bear
lead in the fourth. Allen blasted his first home run of the season
to left field to make it a five-run Camel deficit. The Bears took
the run back in the fifth off CU reliever Chris England as Steven
Karwatt scored on a Nick Dimauro single to push the lead back to
six at 8-2.
Mercer would put the Camels away in the
sixth as Einert placed his first home run of the year off the
scoreboard in right, plating three runs and putting the Bears up
11-2. Both Campbell and Mercer would add single runs in the seventh
to round out the 12-3 Bear victory.
Armstrong and Renfroe led the Bear
offense on the day as Armstrong was 5-8 with four runs and two RBI.
Renfroe chipped in with a 5-7 day with three runs, an RBI and a
stolen base. Hamme was the only Camel with multiple hits on the
day, going 3-8 with two runs, two RBI and a home run.
It was the first time since 1995 that a
three game series was swept in the Mercer-Campbell series. Campbell
accomplished that feat at Taylor Field 12 years ago.
Mercer's next game takes them to Athens
to face Georgia on Tuesday. Campbell will also stay in-state as
they face the Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington Tuesday evening. First
pitch from Wilmington is scheduled for 7:00.
