JOHNSON
CITY,
Tenn. Campbell (6-22, 2-5 A-Sun) rode nine runs in the final
three innings, including five in the seventh, to pick up a 10-
Atlantic Sun victory over East Tennessee State (18-11, 5-2 A-Sun)
Friday at Cardinal Park.
Quinn LeSage (1-6) picked up
his first win of the year by pitching three-plus innings of relief,
striking out three. Brandon Langston (5-2) suffered the loss,
ending a 20-inning scoreless streak and a six-start stretch in
which he was 5-0 with a 1.03 ERA.
Langston and the Bucs looked
to be in control until the seventh inning, when the Camel offense
put up a five-spot to snatch the lead. Robb Meng started the rally
with a single, and Mike Causey's sacrifice
attempt found a hole in the ETSU infield to put runners on first
and third. With one out, Zach Johnson delivered with a
2-RBI double to tie the game at three. After a Daniel
Smith sacrifice bunt for the second out, Camel went on a
two-out roll, as Carlton Floyd, Jacob
Allen and Ryan Hamme all delivered
run-scoring hits to put the Camels up 6-3.
CU would put up four
insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Smith plated one in
the eighth with a base hit and Allen came through with his second
straight two-out hit, a 2-RBI single up the middle, to make it 9-3
after eight frames. After a quick ETSU eighth, Meng unleashed on a
Jimmy Tidwell fastball in the ninth, launching it well over the
25-foot wall in left, to give CU a 10-3 cushion.
Allen's performance stood out
among several fine offensive showings for Campbell, as he ended the
night 3-5 with a double and three RBI. All three of Allen's hits
came with two outs, as the sophomore had not recorded a hit (0-18)
this season with two outs on the scoreboard.
ETSU made things interesting
in the ninth, as the first five Bucs reached to start the frame, en
route to three runs. Hamme came in from left field to pitch and
allowed a single before striking out three straight Bucs to
preserve the 10-6 victory.
The Buccaneers used single
runs in the second, third and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead.
ETSU struck first when Tanner Moore lined a two-out double down the
left field line to bring home Ryan Self. Troy Mendez tried to score
from first on the play, but Hamme quickly threw the ball to Meng
who caught a diving Mendez at home to keep the score at 1-0. An
Anthony Russell double brought in Justin Tramble in the third and
Danny Petro scored on a Brandon Scott wild pitch in
the fifth after a lead-off triple to give the Bucs the 3-0
lead.
The win marked the first
victory of the season for CU when trailing after six innings, as
Campbell was 0-21 prior to Friday. The win also moved Campbell's
record when leading after seven innings to a perfect
6-0.
Hamme and Meng both were 3-5,
as two doubles led to two RBI for Hamme. Meng crossed the plate
three times to go along with his home run in the ninth. Johnson
added two doubles and Floyd also chipped in two hits to a 16-hit
Camel attack that set a season high for hits.
Russell plated two runs for
the Bucs while C.J. Lee, Petro and Tramble all had two hits to lead
the way for the ETSU offense.
East Tennessee State and Campbell
will finish up their series with a doubleheader at Cardinal Park
tomorrow. First pitch for game one is scheduled for
1:00.
