JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.
Campbell (6-24, 2-7 A-Sun) had two ninth-inning comebacks fall
short, as the Camels lost both games by a 5-4 count to first-place
East Tennessee State (20-11, 7-2 A-Sun) Saturday afternoon at
Cardinal Park.
Chris England (1-7) gave up
three runs, only one of which was earned, in one inning of relief
to take the defeat in game one. Caleb Glafenhein (9-2) threw his
second complete game of the season for the ETSU win in game one,
allowing two unearned runs while scattering seven hits.
Blake Herring (1-5) lost game
two despite throwing his second complete game of the season.
Herring has won just one of four career complete games. Todd
Caldwell (2-0) went 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on six
hits to pick up his second win of the season.
ETSU came from behind in game
one by scoring three eighth-inning runs off
Campbell's bullpen. Justin Aughey started the inning with a double
off England and Tanner Moore brought him in two batters later with
a single to tie the game. With two outs, the Bucs received two
unearned runs on three straight throwing errors by third baseman
Daniel Smith, to give them a 5-3 cushion.
The Camels scored an unearned
run off a Ben Allen error in the ninth and brought the tying run to
the plate in Zach Johnson, but Glafenhein coaxed a double play out
of the freshman to preserve the one-run win for the
Bucs.
Campbell broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth
inning via Brandon Scott's legs. The junior stole third with two
outs in the frame and scored as Buccaneer catcher Danny Petro
launched his throw into left field, giving CU the 3-2 lead before
the ETSU comeback.
Ryan Self launched a two-run
homer in the second to tie the game at two and was complemented by
two hits from Aughey and three hits from Anthony Russell. Jacob
Allen and Johnson both had two hits for the CU sticks.
ETSU carried its momentum from
the first game, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead. Russell hit his
first bomb, a solo shot in the first, preceding two Buc runs in the
second on a Troy Mendez groundout and a Michael Courtney safety
squeeze to give the Bucs the early 3-0 lead.
Camel starter Herring settled
down after the first two innings, allowing just one hit over the
next three innings. Caldwell was equally tough for ETSU until he
ran into trouble in the sixth.
Smith started by getting hit
by a pitch, and Floyd singled and Allen reached on a throwing error
by Moore to give CU the bases loaded with nobody out. Caldwell
responded by popping up Hamme and Scott and was helped by a diving
stop by Tramble to get out of the inning unscathed, keeping it a
3-0 ballgame. The excitement from the stand carried to the next
inning, as Russell drilled his second home run of the game for a
4-0 ETSU advantage.
The seventh inning saw
Campbell plate their first runs and chase Caldwell from the game.
Mike Causey singled with one-out and was brought in by a Johnson
double for the first run and last batter for Caldwell. Tony
Lombardi came in relief, and Smith greeted him with a sharp single
to center, rounding out the scoring in the seventh and cutting the
Buc lead in half at 4-2.
The Camels continued to claw
their way back in the eighth, as Hamme started things with a single
and came home on a one-out Meng double to trim the deficit to 4-3.
Drew Story came in and retired the next two batters with Meng at
third to keep ETSU in front by a run.
The Bucs got the run back in
the bottom half with a two-out spurt, as Russell walked and moved
to second on a Herring wild pitch. Petro then followed with his
first hit on the afternoon to push the lead back up to two at
5-3.
For the second straight game,
Campbell's comeback in the ninth fell short as Floyd started the
rally with a two-out walk. Allen battled back from an 0-2 count,
lacing a full count offering for an RBI-double, scoring Floyd to
make it a one-run game. Story bore down and recorded his first
career save getting Hamme to groundout to end the ballgame,
securing the doubleheader sweep and series victory for the
Buccaneers.
Allen had his best weekend of
the year, going .545 (6-11) with four RBI over the three games.
Johnson also had six hits in the set, batting .500 with three runs
batted in. Russell slammed two home runs on his way to a .500
weekend (6-12) with four RBI.
Campbell out-hit and out scored the
Buccaneers on the weekend by 33-28 and 18-16 counts respectively.
The Camels also managed to go through the second game without
striking out, the first time that has happened since May, 2004
against Mercer.
Campbell
and ETSU are both in action on Wednesday as ETSU travels to
Tennessee while the Camels host North Carolina A&T. Game time
for both contests is at 7:00.
