BUIES CREEK, N.C.
Campbell (3-10) used an eight-run seventh inning and multiple RBIs
from four different Camels to clip Holy Cross (1-6) 14-9 Monday
afternoon at Taylor Field. Carlton Floyd, Brandon Scott, Ryan Hamme
and Robb Meng all drove in two or more runs on the game for CU.
Trevor Smith (2-1) picked up
the win in relief of Scott, pitching one inning, allowing two hits,
two earned runs and striking out two. Starter Ryan George (0-1) was
saddled with the loss as he gave up nine earned runs in six-plus
innings for the Crusaders.
The seventh inning had plenty
of fireworks as a combined 15 runs and 11 hits were belted out by
the two teams. Holy Cross finally got to CU starter Scott in the
inning, as he has had taken a no-hitter into the fifth, and had
only given up one hit prior to the seventh. The first five
Crusaders reached via two singles, two walks and a Chris Perron
two-RBI double to chase Scott from the game.
Trevor Smith was brought in
with the bases loaded and struck out Gil Gomez for the first out of
the inning, but walked Tyler Stampone and hit Brendan Akashian to
plate two runs for Holy Cross. Smith then got Norm Roth to go down
swinging for the second out, but Andrew Tenaglia and Kyle Lister
both added run scoring singles, with Lister's knocking in two, to
give Holy Cross the 8-5 lead. The Crusaders sent twelve men to the
plate in the inning, scoring seven runs on five hits.
Campbell
answered with
eight runs of their own in the bottom half. Daniel Smith got the
rally started with a walk, and was followed by a Floyd double, and
a Scott two-RBI double to cut the deficit to 8-7. After an
intentional walk to Hamme, Mike Miller came on in relief for HCU,
and only managed to retire one of the four batters he faced, as
Meng and Jacob Allen both plated RBI-singles to give CU a 9-8
lead.
Mike Thater got the call from
the Crusader bullpen with the bases full of Camels to face Bryan
Braswell. Braswell looped an RBI single to left, and Smith, who
started the inning with a walk, plated Jacob Allen from third on a
sacrifice fly to make the score 11-8. Floyd then capped the inning
off by stroking his second double of the inning off the left field
wall, scoring two runs and making the score 13-8. Campbell also
sent 12 men to the plate in the seventh, plating eight runs on six
hits.
Campbell jumped out to an early lead in
the first, as Floyd slapped his first of three doubles on the day
to start the frame. With one out, Hamme took a George offering to
the opposite field, over the 368 sign in left, to give CU the early
2-0 lead and Hamme his second home run of the year. Campbell would
add a single run in the third and two in the fourth on a Scott
single and bases loaded walk to Meng to make the score
5-1.
Meng would put an exclamation
point on the afternoon in the eighth, belting a mammoth shot on top
of the hitting facility beyond the left field wall, to give him his
second home run in as many games, to give CU its 14th
and final run.
Floyd and Scott both finished
3-5 with Scott driving in three and Floyd two. Hamme went 2-3 with
three runs scored along with the home run, while Meng was 2-4 with
three RBI to go along with his solo shot in the eighth. Carlton
Floyd added a career-high three doubles, as the top four in the CU
lineup combined to go 10-17 with two home runs, eight runs scored
and 10 RBI on the day.
Tenaglia and Joe Moore had
identical lines at the plate for HCU, both going 3-5 with two runs
and an RBI to lead the Crusader offense. Lister and Matt Perron
both added two hits and two RBI to the Holy Cross cause.
Scott made his first career
start on the mound for the Camels, lasting a career-high six
innings for the Camels, and taking a no-hitter into the fifth
inning.
The Camels and Crusaders will
be back in action tomorrow, as the two tangle in a 1:00 match-up
back at Taylor Field.
