BUIES
CREEK, N.C.
Blake Herring struck out 12 in a complete game effort, and
Carlton Floyd was a double short of the cycle, as Campbell (4-10)
swept Holy Cross (1-7) with a 9-2 victory Tuesday at Taylor Field.
Floyd went 3-4 with two runs and two RBI while Mike Causey also
added three hits and three stolen bases for the Camels, who have
now won three games in a row.
Herring (1-3) picked up the
win, becoming the first Campbell pitcher in nearly seven years to
record double-digit strikeouts in a game, with the last being Shaun
Poole in 2000 against PACE. Matt Blake (0-2) took the loss for Holy
Cross giving up seven earned runs in five-plus innings for the
Crusaders, who have now lost five straight.
Campbell scored two runs in four
different innings. Floyd led off the first inning with a triple to
the right-center field gap and Brandon Scott gave the Camels the
1-0 lead with an RBI-single. After moving to third via a passed
ball and fly out, Scott scampered home on a Robb Meng groundout to
give CU the 2-0 lead. Four first-inning runs this series now has
the Camels outscoring their opponents 15-6 in the opening
frame.
The Camels continued the
two-run per-inning trend in the third as Daniel Smith led off with
a single and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by
Blake. Floyd, however, made the error a moot point, as he hit his
first career home run into the pine trees in right field, putting
the Camels up 4-0.
HCU cut the lead in half the
next inning. Brendan Akashian started the inning with a double and
moved to third on Tyler Stampone's single, as Stampone was caught
trying to stretch out a double. Chris Tenaglia doubled in Akashian
and Kyle Lister followed with the third double of the inning to put
Holy Cross within two at 4-2. That's all the Crusaders would manage
against Herring, as he allowed only three hits the rest of the
way.
CU quickly got the runs back
in the fourth as Mike Causey and Zach Johnson singled back-to-back
to start the inning. Causey moved up to third on interference by
second baseman Stampone, and Johnson stole second to set up a Jacob
Allen RBI-groundout to make it 5-2. Bryan Braswell rounded out the
scoring by plating Johnson on an infield single to make it
6-2.
In the sixth, Causey walked to
start the inning, prompting Blake to be lifted in favor of Tom
Arrigg. Causey then proceeded to steal second and third base,
putting himself in scoring position with none out. Zach Johnson
walked and Allen brought Causey home with a sacrifice fly for the
first run of the inning. Johnson then swiped his second bag of the
day, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to
make it 8-2 Camels. CU would add another insurance run in the
eighth on Allen's second sacrifice fly and third RBI of the
afternoon.
Three was the magic number for
Causey Tuesday, as the junior went 3-3 with three singles, runs,
stolen bases and putouts respectively. It was Causey's first
multi-hit game of the season and he has now reached base safely in
twelve straight games. Matt Perron was the only Crusader with
multiple hits, going 2-4 on the afternoon.
Floyd did much of the Camel
damage in the two-game set, going 6-9 with four RBI, a home run, a
triple, three doubles, four runs and a stolen base in the two
games. The Camels run-scoring was efficient, as CU only left two
men stranded on the day, and six total over the two
games.
Holy Cross' next game is
tomorrow at Davidson while Campbell boards the bus for a three-game
series at Marshall starting Friday. First pitch Friday is scheduled
for 1:00 in Huntington, W.V.
