BUIES CREEK, N.C.
Corey Kluber and Chris Ingoglia both put up career high strikeout
numbers with 12 and 14 in game one and two respectively, as the
Hatters (29-9, 12-2 A-Sun) took two Atlantic Sun games from
Campbell (7-30, 2-12 A-Sun) by scores of 5-4 and 3-1 Friday evening
at Taylor Field.
Justin Lilly (0-4) took the
loss in game one for CU, striking out six and giving up four earned
runs in seven innings of work. Kluber (8-0) stayed undefeated by
striking out a season and career high 12 batters in seven innings.
Scott (0-3) pitched well in defeat, striking out four and giving up
just three earned runs over seven innings. Ingoglia (7-2) threw his
third complete game of the season in victory, striking out 14 and
surrendering just a single earned run.
Campbell
made a run at
Stetson in the ninth inning off closer Robbie Elsemiller, loading
the bases with one-out. Hamme grounded into a fielder's choice,
scoring a run to make it 5-4 and putting the tying run on third
with two outs. Scott came up next and hit a high chopper to short
that was fielded by a charging Kevin Johnson whose throw narrowly
beat the hustling Scott to preserve the Hatter win in game
one.
Campbell answered a Hatter unearned
run in the fifth with one in their half of the frame. Robb Meng led
off the inning reaching on a Braedyn Pruitt error and came all the
way around on Causey's bloop double to right to cut the Stetson
lead to 4-1. Stetson negated the Camel run in the next inning, as
Frawley knocked in Kevin Johnson with what proved to be the winning
run, with a two-out single to push the Hatter lead back to
four.
The top of the third brought
two runs for the Hatters as Shane Jordan led off with a double and
was brought home by a seeing-eye Frawley single to for the first
run. After a walk to Braedyn Pruitt, Aaron Crittenden lined a
double to the right field gap, scoring Frawley for the second
Hatter run. The Hatters then tacked on an unearned run in the
fifth, as Frawley scored on a Jacob Allen throwing error on a
Crittenden ground ball to first base.
The bottom of the sixth saw
the fourth consecutive inning with a single run scored, as Meng
singled home Hamme, who was on second after a stolen base, to make
it a 5-2 ballgame. Campbell then pulled within two in the bottom of
the eighth, as an Allen sac fly plated Scott to make it
5-3.
Casey Frawley was the
catalyst for the Hatter offense, going 3-4 with two runs and two
RBI teaming with four other Hatters in the starting line-up with
multiple hits in game one. Ryan Hamme had three hits of his own to
pace CU in game one with Mike Causey adding two hits to the Camel
cause.
Ingoglia was the story of the
second game as the senior doubling his previous career high
strikeouts by striking out 14 Camels, the first time since at least
1993 a Stetson pitcher has struck out that many. He ended the game
giving up just three hits and one earned run in going the entire
nine innings for Stetson. The Hatter defense was also strong,
taking away at least five hits from Campbell with excellent plays
around the diamond.
Justin Bass and Josh
Clendenin both had two hits in game two for Stetson, while Meng had
an inside-the-park home run for the only Camel scoring in the
second contest.
The Hatters broke open a
scoreless game with all the runs they would need in the fifth
inning. Three RBI singles by Jordan, Braedyn Pruitt and Bass gave
the Hatters a 3-0 edge. CU took one run back on an odd play in
their half of the fifth, as Meng's inside-the-park home run
materialized after Brian Pruitt was injured diving for his fly
ball. It would be the only offense the Camels would get, as
Ingoglia controlled the rest of the game, allowing base runners in
just two innings.
Clendenin and Bass both had
four hits and one RBI for Stetson, while Frawley ended up 4-9 with
two RBI on the day. Hamme was the only player in the Camel lineup
to record more than two hits on the doubleheader, going 3-9 over
the two games.
Campbell will wrap up their three-game
set with Stetson tomorrow. First pitch will be at 1:00.
