NASHVILLE, Tenn. Lipscomb starter Rex
Brothers was nearly untouchable, giving up only a bunt single and
one earned run as the Bisons (24-16, 8-5 A-Sun) took a 2-1 A-Sun
match-up from Campbell (8-32, 2-14 A-Sun) Friday evening at Dugan
Field.
Brothers (7-1) pitched eight
strong innings, striking out eight Camels while walking five.
Brandon Scott (0-4) took the loss despite not giving up an earned
run in his four innings of work, fanning two Bisons batters.
Brandon McClurg picked up his third save of the season, his second
in as many games, by pitching a perfect ninth inning.
Lipscomb broke a scoreless
tie in the fourth with a pair of unearned runs. An error on a Ryan
Wilkins ball, followed by a Casey Bond single and stolen base
started the Bisons rally. Justin Sanders brought home the first run
with a sacrifice fly and Bond recorded the second run of the inning
when Andrew Nickerson's ground ball was thrown away by shortstop
Robb Meng.
Campbell finally got to Brothers in
the eighth with its only run. Mike Causey led-off with a walk and
moved to third on a Bryan Braswell sac bunt and Brothers wild
pitch. After a Zach Johnson walk, Carlton Floyd brought in Causey
with a sacrifice fly to cut the Bisons lead in half, where the game
would end.
Campbell failed to make the Lipscomb
defense - ranked ninth in the A-Sun - do much work as the Camels
struck out or popped out for 21 of their 27 outs. The duo of Scott
and LeSage was every bit as good as Brothers, as the two did not
allow an earned run, while the CU defense made three errors on the
evening.
Ben Williams was the only
player from either side to have multiple hits, going 2-4, while
Sanders added the Bisons only RBI. Daniel Smith had the only knock
on the night for CU, pushing a bunt single up the first base line
in the fourth. Floyd plated the Camels' only run with the sac fly
in the eighth.
Campbell and Lipscomb will
wrap up their series with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch for
the doubleheader is set for 1:00 CST.
