NASHVILLE, Tenn. Campbell (9-33,
3-15 A-Sun) fell in the ninth inning of game one 3-2, but rebounded
to take game two from Lipscomb (25-17, 9-6 A-Sun) 4-2 Saturday
afternoon at Dugan Field.
Ryan Hamme (3-2) took the loss
in game one for CU, allowing two hits and the winning run in the
ninth. Taylor Merry (3-0) pitched his second consecutive complete
game for the win, allowing two unearned runs and striking out four
Camels. Blake Herring (2-7) pitched a solid seven innings, allowing
just one earned run and striking out five for the win in game two.
Charles Williams (1-4) took the loss, throwing eight innings for
the Bisons and Trevor Smith picked up his first career save by
hurling the final 1.2 innings for CU.
After being shut-out for eight
innings in the first game, the Bisons rallied for three runs in the
ninth inning to record their seventh straight win. Shane Simpkins
led-off with a single and moved to second on a one-out walk to Ryan
Wilkins. After Hamme was brought in for Justin Lilly, who went a
career high 8.1 innings, Casey Bond smacked his third hit of the
game, a two-RBI triple, the first extra-base hit of the series by
either team, to tie the game at two. Branden Cadavid then came
through with two outs, poking a single to left, winning the game
for Lipscomb.
Campbell took its first lead of the
series in the sixth. Daniel Smith reached on a one-out error and
moved to third on a two-out Brandon York single. Jacob Allen then
came up clutch, lining an RBI-single to left to give the Camels the
1-0 lead.
The Camels perfect execution
for some insurance in the ninth inning. After Allen's second single
of the game and a walk to Mike Causey, CU had runners on first and
third for Todd Matthews. Matthews laid down a perfect squeeze bunt,
scoring Allen to give the Camels the 2-0 lead.
Lipscomb nearly killed
themselves on the base paths in game one, as they had four men
thrown out on the bases in the contest. Shane Simpkins was thrown
out at third by Carlton Floyd in the first, Bond was picked off
first by Lilly in the second, Andrew Nickerson was thrown out at
third trying to advance on an error and Bond was caught stealing in
seventh as part of a strike out/throw out double play.
Bond led the Bisons bats in
game one, going 3-4 with two RBI, with Cadavid adding two hits and
the game-winning RBI. Allen went for two hits and an RBI to pace
the Camels in game one.
The Camels shook off the
disappointing game one loss by scoring two with two outs to take an
early lead. Allen added another RBI single and Brandon Scott plated
a run with a single of his own for the early 2-0 Camel
lead.
Camel plated another run in
the second to make it 3-0. With Floyd on first, Smith singled to
right, advancing Floyd to third and scoring him on a throwing error
by right fielder Simpkins trying to throw Floyd out at third.
Lipscomb got the run right back in their half with three
consecutive singles by Bond, Sanders and Cadavid to make it
3-1.
Campbell took back the run in the
fourth playing some small ball. Scott led-off with a walk and stole
second base. After a Bryan Braswell sac bunt, Zach Johnson singled
to right to plate the fourth Camel run.
After four full scoreless
innings, the Bisons mounted a threat in the eighth. They loaded the
bases with one out, but reliever Trevor Smith came in and coaxed a
pop-out and a ground-out to keep the score at 4-1. The Bisons
plated one in the ninth and had the tying run at the plate in Caleb
Joseph, but Smith got him to pop-up to preserve the victory for the
Camels.
Floyd was the only Camel with
multiple hits in game two, going 2-4 as Allen, Scott and Johnson
all added an RBI for CU. Bond added two hits for the Bisons, and
Simpkins and Allen Bolden added three and two hits respectively for
LU.
Campbell received a magnificent effort
from its pitching staff, as CU hurlers surrendered just two earned
and seven total runs on the weekend. Lipscomb only managed three
extra-base hits and struck out 15 times opposed to drawing six
walks against the Camel staff, in being shut-out for 22 of 26
innings.
Allen and Smith were best for
the CU sticks, as both had three hits on the weekend, with Allen
going for two RBI. Bond and Simpkins proved to be tough outs, as
they were 6-11 and 7-12 on the three-game set respectively for the
Bisons.
Campbell returns to action Tuesday at
Duke for a 7:00 start, while Lipscomb heads to UT-Martin for a 3:00
tilt on Wednesday.
