DURHAM, N.C. Duke
(26-17, 6-16 ACC) pounded out 19 hits, as Nate Freiman blasted two
home runs, en route to a 12-0 non-conference victory over Campbell
(9-34, 3-15 A-Sun) Tuesday evening at Jack Coombs Field.
Seven runs and nine hits in
the first two innings provided all the offense the Blue Devils
would need. Freiman staked the Devils to a 3-0 first inning lead
with a three-run home run, his fifth of the season. Gabby Saade
added a two-out RBI single four batters later to cap off a
four-run, six-hit first inning for Duke.
Duke continued the scoring
barrage in the second, as Jimmy Gallagher led off with a solo home
run, his fifth of the season, to make it 5-0 Blue Devils. The next
four Blue Devils reached, and a Brett Bartles two-RBI double
rounded out the three-run frame to make it 7-0 Duke.
Chris England (1-8) suffered
the loss for CU, lasting just one inning in giving up four runs on
six hits. Jonathan Anderson (3-2) threw five shutout innings to
pick up his third win of the year for Duke.
Alexander Hassan took care of
the next three Duke runs, plating one with a single in the fourth
and two more with a double in the fifth to push the Blue Devil lead
to double digits at 10-0. Duke plated single runs in the sixth and
seventh for their final two runs.
Gallagher was nearly an
impossible out at the top of the Duke lineup, adding a home run to
go along with a 5-6 evening. Freiman had four RBI and three hits to
go along with his two jacks, with Bartles and Hassan posting three
hits as well.
Brandon Scott and Mike Causey
accounted for five of the eight Camel hits, as Scott went 2-4 and
Causey 3-3 with three singles.
The 12-run, 19-hit barrage
ended a
Campbell run in which they had given up five runs or less in six of
their last seven games. It was still just the second most hits
Campbell has given up in a game this season, as The Citadel pounded
out 25 hits vs. CU back on Feb. 27.
Both teams return to
conference action this weekend as Duke travels to Wake Forest and
Campbell hosts in-state rival Gardner-Webb. First pitch for the
Camel-Bulldog doubleheader will be at 4:00 Friday.
