BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. The Gardner-Webb (19-27, 8-12 A-Sun) pitching staff
held Campbell (9-36, 3-17 A-Sun) to three runs over two games, as
the Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from the Camels by scores of 9-1
and 6-2 at Taylor Field Friday evening.
Gardner-Webb raced out of the
gates in game one scoring three first-inning runs. Two sac flies by
Daniel Cooke and Jay McConnell plated the three runs for the
Bulldogs. On McConnell's ball, Carlton Floyd's throw to third
bounced into the third base dugout, allowing the third Bulldog run
to score. The G-W bats stayed hot in the second, as Josh Drewery
belted his first home run of the year, to push the Bulldog lead to
5-0.
After a rough first couple of
innings, Justin Lilly settled down, as the right-hander set down 13
straight Bulldogs after allowing five runs in the first two
innings. Gardner-Webb, however, found its stroke again in the
seventh, as they plated four runs on five hits. Two run scoring doubles by Drewery and
Justin Loyd and RBI singles by Jamall Kinard and Cooke doubled the
Bulldog lead to 9-1.
Campbell loaded the bases in the third
inning, but managed its only run of the game on a Todd Matthews
groundout. It was Matthews' 13th RBI of the
season.
Jonathon Ban (3-5) got the
win on the mound for the Bulldogs, as he pitched eight innings,
striking out five while allowing just one run. Lilly (0-5) took the
loss going 6.1 innings, striking out five and surrendering all nine
Gardner-Webb runs.
Daniel Smith, Brandon York
and Robb Meng all went 2-4 in the first game for CU. Drewery paced
G-W, going 3-4 with the home run and three RBI. Cooke added two RBI
and Loyd was 2-4 as well.
Gardner-Webb jumped out early
in game two as well, as a Cooke groundout plated a Bulldog run in
the first inning. A pair of runs in the fourth lengthened the lead
to 3-0, as Matt Rizzuto laid down a suicide squeeze for the first
run and Jon Ahearn singled in the second run of the
inning.
Campbell seized the two runs back in
their half of the fourth. The first four Camels reached as CU
plated two runs in the inning on a York walk and a Meng fielder's
choice to make it a one-run ballgame at 3-2.
After three and one half
scoreless innings, Gardner-Webb added two insurance runs in the
ninth. Ahearn led off with a triple, and after a Brandon Scott walk
to Shea Harris, Kinard singled in the first run of the inning. Four
batters later, Nate MacDonald worked a bases loaded walk for the
Bulldogs' second run, giving them the final 6-2 margin.
Ben Campbell (5-4) shut down
the Camels in game two going 7.1 innings, allowing two earned runs
on eight hits. Quinn LeSage fell to 1-7 after going eight-plus
innings and allowing five earned runs. Matt Taffazzoli earned his
first save of the season by pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless
baseball.
Scott ended a good day at the
plate, going 3-4 in the second game. John Watlington recorded his
first hits as a Camel as he went 2-4 in the nightcap. Kinard,
Lokken and Ahearn all added two hits and an RBI to the Bulldog
effort in game two.
Kinard and Drewery both had
four hits on the doubleheader, as Kinard scored three runs and had
two RBI and stolen bases. Drewery added a home run four runs and
three RBI in the two games. Scott was 4-8 on the day for
Campbell.
Game three between
Gardner-Webb and Campbell will take place tomorrow at 1:00 at
Taylor Field.
