BUIES CREEK, N.C.
Every Campbell starter had a hit as the Camels (10-36, 4-17 A-Sun)
tied their season high with 18, in taking their final game with
Gardner-Webb (19-28, 8-13 A-Sun) by a score of 12-2 Saturday
afternoon at Taylor Field.
Brandon Scott was led a host
of solid offensive performances, going 2-4 with two runs, four RBI,
his first home run and three stolen bases. Daniel Smith was 3-4
with three runs and Brandon York added three hits, including his
first career triple, to the
Campbell attack.
Blake Herring (3-7) threw his
fourth complete game of the season, striking out eight while
scattering out five Bulldog hits. Wes Cogdill (1-2) suffered the
loss, getting touched for four runs on six hits in just 2.1 innings
of work.
Campbell continued to swing the bats
well in the third off Cogdill, plating the final three runs they
would need. John Watlington started-off with a single, Smith was
hit by a pitch and Ryan Hamme singled to load the bases with one
out. Campbell plated its first run when Scott was hit by another
pitch, and its second when York singled up the middle, chasing G-W
starter Cogdill from the game. Taylor Brooks came in and uncorked a
wild pitch for the third Camel run of the inning, to put CU ahead
for good at 4-0
Campbell scored in six straight
innings beginning in the second, as Campbell grabbed the early lead
by manufacturing an early run. Scott led-off with a single and
proceeded to steal second base. After a York sac bunt, Robb Meng
drove in Scott with a single through the drawn-in infield to put
the Camels up 1-0.
Campbell plated runs in its third
straight inning in the fourth, as consecutive singles by Floyd,
Smith and Hamme scored one run. Scott then rolled a fielders choice
to short to score Smith for the second run of the frame.
The Camel batting barrage
continued in the fifth, as three straight singles by Todd Matthews,
Allen and Watlington led to a Floyd sac fly and a Smith infield
single to extend the Camel lead to 8-0.
Gardner-Webb plated its first
runs in the sixth, using three hits, including a two-out, two RBI
double by Daniel Cooke, took cut the Camel lead to six. CU quickly
erased the two runs with a run in the sixth, and three runs in the
seventh, using Scott's first home run of the year to go ahead
12-2.
Cooke's two-RBI double was
high point on the afternoon for the Gardner-Webb offense, as
Herring's only blemish in the form of three hits and two runs came
in G-W's sixth. Josh Drewery's effort over the weekend led the
Bulldogs, as he slapped out five hits, scoring four runs and
driving in three.
Smith and Scott both had a
good weekend for CU, going 6-12 and 7-12 respectively. Scott's day
Saturday gave him a home run, two runs, four RBI and three stolen
bases on the weekend. York and Meng also contributed five hits
apiece over the three games for Campbell.
Next up for Campbell is a
two-game set at North Carolina State next weekend. First pitches
will be at 7:00 and 2:00 for Friday and Saturday
