BUIES CREEK, N.C.
Campbell (10-41, 4-19 A-Sun) and North Florida (22-28 A-Sun, 11-12,
A-Sun) combined for 62 hits on their doubleheader, as the Ospreys
took two games from the Camels by counts of 9-8 (11 inn.) and 13-11
Friday evening at Taylor Field.
Several players had a monster
evening led by
North Florida's Mycal Jones' second game. Jones, a redshirt
freshman, blasted two home runs and drove in seven in the second
game alone to complement a 4-10, eight RBI evening. TJ Thompson was
6-9 and Jon Dandridge was 5-8 with three triples and three RBI for
the Osprey.
Not to be outdone, the Camels
had several of their own shine, as Carlton Floyd went 6-10
and Ryan Hamme went 6-9 on the
evening, with Hamme earning four hits in game one. Daniel
Smith had five hits of his own and Brandon Scott went 4-10 on
the day with five RBI and a grand slam in game one.
The Osprey's completed their
comeback in game one by plating the winning run in the
11th inning. Travis Martin doubled to lead off the
inning, and after pinch runner TJ Gaudy moved to third on a bunt,
Thompson singled him for the game-winner. It was Thompson's fifth
game-winning RBI of the season.
Campbell used a two-out barrage to
jump out to a five-run, fifth inning lead. With two outs,
consecutive singles by Floyd, Smith and Hamme loaded the bases for
Scott, who deposited an 0-1 delivery from UNF starter Brad Johnson
over the left-center field fence to give the Camels the 6-1
advantage.
UNF wiped away Campbell's big
fifth with seven runs of its own to take a two-run lead in the
seventh. Dandridge led-off the frame with a triple and Jimmy
Glanville brought him in with a double to make it 6-2. CU starter
Blake Herring retired the
next two Osprey batters, but North Florida rallied for six runs
with two outs, as the next seven reached, including Dandridge
plating his second extra-base of the inning, as UNF took an 8-6
lead.
Campbell got one back in each of the
next two frames to tie the game at eight before bowing out in the
11th. Hamme and Scott led-off the CU seventh with
singles, and after a Rob Lyerly sac bunt, Allen
lofted a sac fly to center to make it a one-run game at 8-7.
Campbell then plated another run in the eighth, as Zach
Johnson scampered home on an error by first basemen Glanville
on an attempted pick-off by UNF, to make it an 8-8
ballgame.
Brandon Scott (0-5) took the
game one loss going four innings in relief and giving up the lone
earned run in the eleventh while Antonio Franzese (2-4) picked up
his second win of the season by going five innings in relief for
the Ospreys, while also allowing a single earned run.
Game two provided more
offensive fireworks, as North Florida carried its momentum from
game one into the early stages of game two, jumping out to a 10-1
lead.
In the UNF first, an RBI
single by Damon Olinto, an RBI triple by Dandridge and a sacrifice
fly by Knight, put the Ospreys up 3-0. UNF struck for another three spot in
the third off CU starter Trevor Smith. Jones blasted
his first home run of the game, a two-run job, and Glanville plated
Dandridge after his second triple of the day on an infield single
to make it a 6-1 ballgame.
Jones then put his stamp on
the second game in the fourth. After a walk and two singles loaded
the bases, Jones hit his second dinger of the game, a grand slam
that looked to clinch a win for the Osprey's as they went ahead
10-1.
Campbell came roaring back
two innings later, as they put seven runs up on the board to cut
its deficit to two. Six straight hits to begin the fifth inning and
consecutive RBI singles by John Watlington, Daniel
Smith, Floyd and Hamme pulled the Camels within 10-5. After the
first out Allen plated two more runs with a double, making it a
10-7 ballgame. Allen then came around on an error and a Rob Lyerly
groundout to round out the rally, by making it a 10-8
game.
North Florida answered with three
runs of their own in the sixth. An Olinto single, a Dandridge walk
and a Glanville double plated the first UNF run and chased Camel
reliever Hunter Ford from the game.
Chad Knight greeted Hamme to the mound with a two-RBI single to
push the Osprey lead back up to five at 13-8.
The Camels negated the Osprey
sixth with three runs of their own in the seventh. Three straight
hits by Smith, Hamme and Scott started the inning as Hamme knocked in
one with a double and scored on a play in which a failed pickoff
attempt at second allowed the sophomore to score. Bryan
Braswell drove in his third run of the year with a two-out
single to bring it to 13-11 but that's as close as CU would get,
falling by that same score.
Trevor Smith (2-3) was the
losing pitcher in game two, allowing six earned runs in three
innings of work. Jonathan Turner (4-1) pitched four and two-thirds
innings of relief to record his fourth win of the year for the
Ospreys.
The final game of the series
between Campbell and North Florida is scheduled to take place
tomorrow at Taylor Field. First pitch will be at 1:00.
