BUIES CREEK, N.C. North
Florida (23-28, 12-12 A-Sun) found a way to manufacture runs, as
five sacrifice flies translated to a 7-3 Osprey victory and series
sweep over Campbell (10-42, 4-20 A-Sun) Saturday afternoon at
Taylor Field.
John Atteo (6-3) was solid in
the middle innings, setting down nine straight Camels at one point,
en route to an eight-hit, one earned run showing in the victory.
Quinn LeSage (1-9) bent but did not allow a big inning, as he gave
up five earned runs over six innings of work in taking the loss for
CU.
UNF scored in five of its
first six innings, and used four runs in the fourth through sixth
innings to pull away from the Camels. The Ospreys plated the last
run they would need in the fifth, as CU tormentors Jon Dandridge
and Jimmy Glanville walked and doubled to put runners on second and
third with none out. Chad Knight then plated the fourth UNF run
with their third sacrifice fly, putting the tally at 4-2
Ospreys.
Dandridge and Glanville were
tough outs all weekend as the two both went .545 (6-11) on the
weekend. Dandridge collected three triples and four RBI while
Glanville swatted four doubles and drove in five Osprey
runs.
North Florida never trailed on the
day, as they got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first. Damon
Olinto doubled and moved to third on a Mycal Jones single.
Dandridge brought Olinto home with the first sacrifice fly to give
the Ospreys the early lead. UNF used a second sac fly from
Glanville in the third to double their lead to 2-0.
Campbell got the two runs back to tie
it in the third. Carlton Floyd started the rally with a double and
moved to third on a Daniel Smith bunt. Floyd came around on a
Brandon Scott sac fly for the first CU run and Jacob Allen followed
with a two-out double to bring Smith home to tie the game at two.
As soon as the Camels tied it, however, the Ospreys took the lead
right back, as Preston Hale led-off the fourth with a double and
was brought home on a TJ Thompson single for a 3-2 UNF
lead.
Allen's 2-4 day gave him six
hits on the weekend as Campbell batsmen had five hits or more on
the weekend. Allen, Floyd, Ryan Hamme, Smith and Scott all reached
the mark, with Floyd leading the bunch with a 7-15 (.467) showing.
Bryan Braswell also collected two hits, matching a season high for
the freshman.
The Ospreys extended their
lead to four with two tallies in the sixth. Jones plated the first
run with UNF's fourth sacrifice fly of the day, and Glanville
continued the rally with a two-out RBI double to put the Osprey up
6-2.
After being held scoreless
for four innings, the Camels got to Atteo for a run in the eighth.
Scott stroked a one-out triple and scored on an Allen fielder's
choice, just beating Glanville's throw home, to make it a 6-3 UNF
lead. The Ospreys answered
the Camels yet again with a run in the ninth. UNF loaded the bases,
but only managed one run on Brian Wilson's sac fly; the team's
fifth of the afternoon, providing the final 7-3 margin.
Campbell will play its final home game
Tuesday against UNC Wilmington, while UNF will travel to Ohio State
for two non-conference games with the Buckeyes. The Camels will
celebrate senior night, as the pre-game ceremony will begin at
approximately 6:40 with first pitch to follow.
