KENNESAW,
Ga. Brandon Scott threw a
complete-game, three-hit gem and Daniel Smith collected three
hits as Campbell (11-43, 5-20 A-Sun) took down Kennesaw State
(30-23, 11-14 A-Sun) 4-1 Friday evening at Stillwell Stadium.
Scott (1-5), making his first
start in six appearances, allowed just one hit after the third
inning to go along with six strikeouts on the evening. Bubba
Blalock (2-6) suffered the loss despite lasting eight and one-third
innings and also striking out six.
The Camels scored the only
two runs they would need in the third. Zach Johnson reached on an
error and Carlton Floyd was hit by a
pitch to start the rally. Smith then doubled in a run with his
second hit of the day and Scott followed with an RBI groundout to
make it 2-1 Camels.
Jacob Allen lengthened the
lead for Campbell in the sixth with a two-RBI double. The first two
Camels reached, and after a failed sacrifice attempt, Allen lined a
hanging breaking ball from Blalock down the right field line to
plate the two runs.
Kennesaw did what it does
best by scoring a run in the first to take the lead. Jacob Robbins
raced home from third to score the first run of the game when Jay
Morrow was caught stealing. It was Kennesaw's 58th run
of the year in the first inning, their most successful offensive
frame, as they took the 1-0 lead.
For Smith, it was his fourth
multi-hit effort in his last six games. Scott helped his cause at
the plate with two hits and an RBI, and Bryan Braswell matched a
season high with two hits. Robbins, Martin Baker and Matt Dallas
accounted for the three Owl hits.
It was Campbell's sixth
complete game of the year, and the least amount of hits a CU
opponent has managed off the Camels this season. The loss for
Kennesaw was its first at home since March 31 (a 3-0 loss to
Stetson), snapping an eight-game home winning streak.
Campbell will go for its first
three-game series win since last May tomorrow as they and the Owls
wrap up their seasons with a doubleheader. First pitch for the
twinbill is set for 1:00.
