RALEIGH, N.C. North Carolina
State (30-16, 12-12 ACC) used a six-run third inning and three home
runs to take a 12-4 victory over Campbell (10-37, 4-17 ACC) Friday
evening at Doak
Field.
State scored all the runs
they would need via a six-run explosion in its half of the third.
Mike Roskopf started the scoring with an RBI-double, and Dallas
Poulk landed the big blow of the inning with a two-RBI single with
two outs. Ramon Carona and Pat Ferguson both had RBI singles in the
inning, as the Pack sent 10 men to the plate to give themselves a
six-run cushion.
The Pack bats heated up a
cool night, as State blasted three home runs in the contest.
Roskopf blasted his 10th home run, a two-run shot off Blake
Herring in the fourth, Ryan Pond followed with a home run of
his own in the sixth to make it an 11-2 ballgame, and Matt Payne
lined a solo blast in the seventh to plate the 12th and
final State run.
Sam Brown (1-0) picked up his
first collegiate victory by going a season and career high 5.0
innings, allowing just one earned run on three Camel hits. Justin
Lilly (0-6) was roughed up, giving up seven earned runs on 11
hits in three innings of work.
John Watlington had his third
consecutive two-hit game, adding his first RBI as a Camel and Carlton
Floyd blasted his second home run of the year, a towering shot
to right, knocking in the other three Campbell runs.
The Wolfpack scored two runs
in the first as they used three infield singles and a Campbell
error to take the early 2-0 lead. With two outs, a Roskopf infield
single and throwing error by Robb Meng plated the first
run and Caleb Mangum's RBI single accounted for the two
runs.
Floyd's big blast in the
third gave the Camels some life as they tied the game at two. After
Mike Causey reached on an
infield single, Floyd took the first pitch he saw from Brown over
the 380 foot marker in right for his second home run of the year to
tie the game before the Pack pulled away.
Watlington added an RBI
single and Floyd plated another run with a groundout to plate the
final two Camel runs in the seventh.
Poulk, Pond and Roskopf all
had three hits for State. Roskopf and Pond had three and two RBI
respectively to lead the 16-hit Wolfpack attack. The win was N.C.
State's fourth straight over CU, and its sixth in seven games. It
also marked the fourth win of its last five in which the Pack had
scored in double digits.
The second game of the
two-game set between the Camels and Wolfpack will take place back
at Doak Field Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for
2:00.
