RALEIGH, N.C. A
combined six North Carolina State (31-16, 12-12 ACC) pitchers held
Campbell (10-38, 4-17 A-Sun) hitless through six and two-thirds
innings, as the Wolfpack held off a late Campbell surge to drop the
Camels 7-3 Saturday afternoon at Doak Field.
Nate Karns (3-2) took the
victory in a predetermined staffed game, going four innings and
striking out two Camel batters without allowing a hit. Quinn
LeSage (1-8) battled through six innings, giving up six
Wolfpack runs on 10 hits in taking his eighth loss of the
season.
Marcus Jones had a perfect
day at the plate for State, as he was 4-4 with a home run, a double
and two RBI. Ramon Carona also added three hits and two RBI for the
Pack, who defeated
Campbell in the squads' fourth straight contest and 11th
time in their last 13 meetings.
The N.C. State pitching staff
was nearly un-hittable as the Pack held the Camels hitless through
six and two-thirds innings. Rob Lyerly broke up the
no-hit bid off State reliever Kyle Rutter in the seventh, and in
the eighth the Camels broke through for three unearned runs. CU
tallied two on a misplayed Daniel Smith groundball, and
Ryan Hamme followed that up
with an RBI double off the right field wall to cut the Pack lead in
half at 6-3
State's fast start and runs
late in the game proved to be too much as the Pack began by scoring
two runs in the first and second innings. After hits by Dallas
Poulk and Carona in the first, Ryan Pond drove both of them in with
a double down the left field line for his 34th and
35th RBI of the year to stake the Pack to a 2-0 lead.
State pushed across two more in the second on a two-RBI single by
Carona to double their lead at 4-0.
State added single runs in
the fourth, sixth, and eighth to pull away from the Camels. Poulk
lined an RBI triple down the right field line in the fourth, Jones
roped his fourth home run of the year in the sixth and doubled in
his second RBI in the eighth to pull away from the
Camels.
Carlton Floyd added the other
Camel hit on the day, as the Camels matched a season-low for hits
with three on the afternoon. Brandon Scott also added a
stolen base, bringing his team leading total up to 16 on the year.
Scott now sits in fourth on Campbell's all-time stolen base list
with 42.
The Camels managed just nine
hits in the two games versus State. John Watlington and Floyd
were the lone Camels with multiple hits, stroking two apiece on the
weekend.
N.C. State continues non-conference play
with a 7:00 road date at UNC Wilmington on Wednesday. Campbell is
back at it on Monday at Taylor Field for a make-up game with
Charleston Southern. First pitch will be at 7:00.
