NASHVILLE, TENN. - Despite playing without four starters, Campbell
produced its greatest offensive outburst of the season and defeated
Belmont 3-1 Saturday in Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer
action.
With seniors Vince Petrasso and Austin Skakle out due to injury,
ailing junior forward Khalil Johnson limited to just 10 minutes and
sophomore central defender Kevin Orozco unavailable because of
yellow card accumulation, the Camels instead relied on goals from a
trio of freshmen, while outshooting the hosts by a 21-11
margin.
Keegan Terry and Mitchell Cardenas had a goal and assist each,
while fellow frosh Justin Smith found the net in his
second-straight game for Campbell (2-6-1, 1-0-1), which gained four
points in the league standings on its Tennessee road trip. In
fact, Campbell freshmen produced all five goals (including Ben
Iiames' 87th minute equalizer in Thursday's 2-2 draw at Lipscomb)
during its swing.
"It's good to get three points on the road at Belmont, which
historically has been a tough place for us to play," said Campbell
head coach Doug Hess. "I thought our guys did well in dictating
the play and grabbing the game. Unfortunately, we conceded a goal
first, and we have to be better in managing counter attacks.
However, we showed character in coming back to score three
consecutive goals."
The Bruins went in front in the 10th minute on Brandon Tarr's fifth
strike of the year that came off Justin Hay's feed.
Campbell, however, drew level just over four minutes later on
Cardenas' re-start, which Iiames headed down in the box to Terry,
whose one-timer found the net for his first collegiate goal.
The game remained deadlocked until the 55th minute when Belmont's
Edgardo Padilla was issued his second yellow card of the match and
the Bruins were forced to play a man down for the remaining 35
minutes.
Shortly thereafter Terry and Cardenas linked again to put the
Camels in front. This time Terry's shot bounded off the post and
Cardenas beat the Bruins to the ball to slot home his third goal of
the season, and first collegiate winner.
Campbell put the game out of read with 8:39 remaining when Bryan
Dornseif slid a pass to Smith behind the Belmont back four and the
freshman touched the ball by keeper Lou Manning before netting a
left-footed shot for his second goal of the year.
Belmont (1-8-1, 0-2-0) has lost five-straight.
The Camels directed 10 shots on goal (scoring on three) compared to
just one shot on target from the hosts. Manning finished with
seven saves in the Belmont nets, while Ryan Amons did not make one
for CU. Campbell took nine corner kicks to just a pair for the
Bruins.
Since the start of the 2005 season, Campbell owns a 26-4-5 record
in A-Sun regular season matches, best among current league
members. The Camels won the 2005 and 2008 A-Sun regular season
titles and claimed the league's tournament title in 2007.
CU, which now holds an 8-2-0 edge in the series vs. the Bruins,
returns home to host USC Upstate Thursday in a 7:00 p.m.
kick-off.
