BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Khalil Johnson scored three goals and Vince
Petrasso added three assists to lead Campbell to a 4-1 Atlantic Sun
Conference men's soccer victory over visiting USC Upstate Thursday
night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
For the second-straight outing, the Camels (3-6-1, 2-0-1) notched
their season-high for goals scored. Johnson struck three times -
twice in the 41st minute and again in the 61st - before the
Spartans scored.
Bryan Dornseif added the final goal in the 81st minute for
Campbell, winner of its last two (including last Saturday's 3-1
victory at Belmont) and unbeaten (2-0-1) over the last three
outings.
Campbell held a 19-6 advantage in shots over Upstate (3-5-1,
0-1-1), including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal
"It was great for Khalil to get off the mark a bit tonight," said
Campbell head coach Doug Hess. "He was striking the ball well in
training all week, so we felt it was just a matter of time before
he broke out. I know that Vince has been frustrated by not finding
the net himself, but he certainly provided excellent service
tonight."
Mitchell Cardenas and Johnson nearly put the Camels in front in the
first half. In the 33rd minute, Cardenas struck a curling free
kick from about 30 yards on the left flank that Upstate keeper Pat
Regna had to tip over the bar for a corner.
In the 38th minute, Kevin Orozco played a long pass over the
defense to Johnson, who broke in on Regna 1-v-1, but the Spartan
keeper again left his feet to make the save.
However, Johnson scored twice in a 28-second span to provide the
Camels with a two-goal cushion at half-time. His thundering
left-footed shot from the top of the box off a pass from
Justin Madrid opened the scoring at the 40:15 mark.
Seconds later, Petrasso set up Johnson for another left-footed
effort through the middle of the Upstate defense. Campbell went
into the dressing room with a 12-3 edge in shots.
In the 61st minute, Johnson completed Campbell's first hat trick
since Willy Guadarrama scored five goals against Stetson on Oct. 6,
2005. Petrasso again provided the pass - a through ball down the
center of the field - to Johnson, who cut back behind the Spartan
back four and scored with his right foot.
Just 32 seconds later, a failed Campbell clearance fell to Tim
Bailey in the area and he lofted a right-footed shot that dipped
under the bar to pull Upstate within 3-1.
Petrasso twice broke free behind the Upstate backs, but his 70th
minute shot caromed off the left post and his 74th minute attempt
narrowly missed wide of the same mark.
The senior from Woodbridge, Ontario, however, recorded his third
assist of the evening in the 81st minute on a well-weighted pass
that Dornseif trapped, then side-stepped a defender, then smacked a
first-time strike into the right side of the goal.
Petrasso's career-high three-assist performance vaulted him into
the A-Sun assists lead with seven. It marked the second-year in a
row that a Camel has set up three goals in a game, following Josue
Soto's assists trick last year vs. Lipscomb.
"I thought we had a solid performance on both sides of the ball,"
said Hess. "Of course, I'm disappointed in the fashion in which we
gave up the goal. We have to do a better job in clearing it. That
being said, the team did a very good job getting behind the ball
and defending. I thought we were very tough to break down."
Campbell keeper Ryan Amons finished with three saves, while Regna
had four in the Upstate nets.
The Camels return to action Saturday in a 4:00 p.m. kickoff at home
against East Tennessee State.
