KENNESAW,
Ga. The Campbell University baseball team fell behind 8-2
after four innings. The
Camels rally would come up just short as Campbell lost to Kennesaw
State by a score of 9-8.
The loss drops the Camels' record to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in league
play.
Senior Josh Fish
(Bellingham, Wash.) was credited with the loss in game two of
Saturday's doubleheader.
Fish's record on the season now sits at 1-1. Fish pitched the final three innings
of the game giving up three hits while the Owls scored one run,
which proved to be the game winning run.
The Camels were
led at the plate by senior Matt Keen, as well as juniors Alex
Aycoth and Zach Johnson.
Keen, the Four Oaks, N.C. native finished the game 2-of-5 while
scoring two runs. Aycoth
(Sanford, Fla.), finished game two of the doubleheader batting
2-of-5, with an RBI.
Zach Johnson
finished the game going 3-of-5 from the dish, with two RBI. The junior Smithfield, N.C.,
also scored the game tying run in the top of the eighth inning.
Dan Gardo (0-0)
got the start on the mound for the Camels. Gardo (West Chester, Pa.) would pitch
just three innings as the Owls would score eight runs on just five
hits during the sophomore's outing. Jeff Hoffman (Ramsey, N.J.) would also
see action for the Camels.
Hoffman pitched two complete innings without allowing any runs and
just four Kennesaw State hits.
Kennesaw State
pitcher Justin Edwards would be credited with the win. Edwards pitched the final three
innings of the game, giving up just three hits while just one Camel
run would score. Edwards'
record for the season is now 1-1.
After falling
behind 8-2 after four innings, the Camels exploded for five runs in
the fifth inning. After
Stephen Parsons popped out to the second baseman, D.J. Johnson
walked and Chris Bangi struck out, the Camels finally found the
offense. Ellis Lowe and
Ryan Hamme would both reach on fielding errors.
D.J. Johnson would
score on the fielding error that allowed Hamme to reach first
base. Alex Aycoth's single
to right field would score Ellis Lowe and Ryan Hamme would score on
a fielder's choice, which cut the Owls lead to 8-5.
After Matt Keen
singled to left field, Zach Johnson doubled to center field. Johnson's double would bring
home Aycoth and Keen, cutting the deficit to 8-7.
D.J. Johnson's
sacrifice bunt in the top of the eighth inning would allow Zach
Johnson to score and tie the game at eight a piece.
The Owls' half of
the eighth would get started with first baseman Ross Tendler
advancing all the way to third base on a fielding error by right
fielder Zach Johnson.
Tendler would score the winning run on Jacob Robbins sacrifice
bunt.
The Owls were led
at the plate by center fielder Jacob Robbins and catcher Jace
Whitmer. Robbins finished
batting 2-for-2, while scoring three runs. Whitmer finished 3-of-4 at the plate,
with two RBI. Kennesaw
State now sits 2-4 on the season, including 1-1 in the A-Sun.
Campbell and
Kennesaw State will finish the three game tilt on Monday
afternoon. First pitch is
slated for 1 p.m.
