BUIES CREEK, N.C. The Campbell University baseball team was
swept by Longwood University in doubleheader action on
Tuesday. Longwood defeated
Campbell in game one by a score of 10-7 and 8-7 in game two (seven
innings). Campbell's record
falls to 8-6 on the season, while Longwood improves to 10-6.
Game one would see
Carlton Floyd get the call on the hill for the Camels. The senior from Riegelwood, N.C.
pitched three complete innings, giving up seven hits and three
earned runs.
The Lancers jumped
out to an early 2-0 lead after one complete inning, but the Camels
would come back to tie the game after two innings. The score remained a tie after six
complete innings, as both teams posted six runs on the
scoreboard.
Longwood would
take the lead for good after scoring four runs in the top half of
the seventh inning.
Longwood catcher Jon Quigley hit a solo homerun to left field;
shortstop Richie Palase would later hit a double to the left center
field gap, scoring two runs. Palase would score later in the inning
to complete the scoring for the Lancers.
Campbell could
manage just one run in the ninth inning. Jonathon Lopez (Vineland, N.J.) was
credited with the loss after pitching just one complete inning
while allowing four runs to score on five hits. The loss drops Lopez's record to 1-2
on the season.
Zach Johnson and
Ellis Lowe paced the Camels in game one. Johnson (Smithfield, N.C.) finished
the game batting 3-of-5, with two runs scored while Lowe (San
Diego, Calif.) finished 2-of-5 at the dish with two RBI and two
runs scored.
Longwood was paced
at the plate in game on by Robby Newman, who finished 3-of-4 with a
run scored. Longwood hurler
Mark Montgomery, who now owns a 2-0 mark, would pick up the win
after pitching four complete innings, allowing three runs on just
three hits.
Game two saw
senior Ryan Hamme get the call on the hill for Campbell. The senior from Wilmington, N.C.
pitched six complete innings allowing five earned runs on 11 hits,
while fanning four batters.
Campbell found
itself in a 5-2 hole after just three innings. The Camels would rally in the bottom
of the sixth inning to tie the game at five a piece. The Lancers would answer right back
with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh. Campbell could manage just two runs in
the bottom of the final frame, as they dropped game two to the
Lancers by a count of 8-7.
Longwood was paced
at the plate by Phil Cerreto, who finished 3-of-4, with two RBI and
two runs scored. Longwood
pitcher Lance Harting would be credited with the win after pitching
the final 1.1 innings giving up three runs on five hits.
Hunter Ford
(Wilmington, N.C.) was credited with the loss after pitching just a
third of an inning, while allowing three runs on four hits. The loss drops Ford's record to
0-1 on the season.
Shortstop Kevin
Nelson was the offensive catalyst for the Camels in game two. The junior from Sunrise, Fla.
finished game two batting 3-of-4 and scoring two runs (one in each
of the final two innings).
Nelson's efforts were complimented by Brian Gana (pinch
hitter/first base). Gana, a
senior from Richland, Wash., finished game two batting 2-for-2 with
an RBI.
Campbell will
return to action tomorrow as they travel to Durham, N.C. to face
the Eagles of NC Central.
First pitch at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park is scheduled for 3
