BUIES CREEK,
N.C. The Campbell
University baseball team defeated the Dayton Flyers on Wednesday
afternoon at Taylor Field by a score of 14-4. With the victory, the Camels improve to 10-7 on the
season while the Flyers drop to 8-9.
Campbell would
score early and often en route to the victory over the Flyers. Campbell would post two runs in the bottom of
second and third innings. Campbell scored
the first pair of runs on Bryan Braswell's single to right
field. The Rocky Mount, N.C. native brought
home Zach Johnson (Smithfield, N.C.) and Kevin Nelson (Sunrise,
Fla.).
In
the third, it would be Josh Holskey who would drive in two
runs. The freshman from Roanoke, Va. hit a
sharp liner right up the middle as Matt Keen and Zach Johnson would
come in to score.
Leading 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Camels would extend
their lead to 8-0. The inning was started
with a Ryan Hamme double, followed by a double by Zach Johnson that
would bring Hamme around to score.
After Aycoth was hit by a pitch, Josh Holskey would bring home
Johnson thanks to his sacrifice fly to right field. After Kevin Nelson hit a triple to right center field,
that scored Aycoth, Graham Fronk would bring in Nelson thanks to a
sacrifice bunt.
Logan Davis got the start on the hill for the Camels on
Wednesday. The junior from Ft. Cobb, Okla.
would be credited with the win and improve to 4-0 on the
season. Davis finished his five inning
performance allowing no runs on just three hits, while fanning four
Dayton batters.
Campbell would
again post another two spot on the board, this time in the bottom
of the sixth. This time it would be Ryan
Hamme scoring on a Max Navalinski wild pitch, while Alex Aycoth
came in to score thanks to a Kevin Nelson single to center
field. Those two runs would increase
Campbell's lead to 10-1.
The six runs by the Camels in the fifth and sixth innings would put
the game out of reach. Dayton would push
just three runs across over the final three innings, while the
Camels scored four in the bottom of the eighth. This was the sixth time that the Camels have scored 14
or more runs this season.
Leaders at the plate for the Camels include Zach Johnson, Josh
Holskey, Kevin Nelson, Bryan Braswell, and D.J. Johnson
(Winston-Salem, N.C.). The Johnson duo
combined to bat 3-of-5 with three RBI, while combining to score
four runs. Holskey finished the day a
perfect 2-of-2, while driving in three runs.
Meanwhile, Nelson and Braswell combined for five hits, five RBI,
while scoring four of Campbell's 14 runs.
After Logan Davis exited the game, Campbell would use Jonathon
Lopez, Jeff Hoffman, Parker Fleming, and Richard Gaito to close out
the Flyers. The quartet combined to pitch
four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.
Dayton hurler
Tim Corbey would be credited with the loss after pitching the first
3.1 innings of the game. Corbey (0-1)
allowed four runs on six hits while walking five Campbell
batters. Zach Jacob was the bright spot for
the Flyers on Wednesday. Jacob finished the
day batting 2-of-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
