JACKSONVILLE, Fla. After winning game one of the series,
Campbell had its five game winning streak snapped after dropping
both games of Saturday's doubleheader. Campbell (19-17, 5-12 A-Sun) dropped a
7-6 heartbreaker to Jacksonville in game one. Meanwhile, Jacksonville (25-12, 14-7
A-Sun) defeated Campbell 10-5 in the series finale, earning the
series victory.
Jacksonville
7, Campbell 6 (DH Game
1)
Campbell would
play nearly flawless baseball over the first eight innings;
however, it would not be quite enough as Jacksonville would score
six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning en route to the 7-6
victory.
Campbell got a
great outing from junior Logan Davis (Ft. Cobb, Okla.). Davis pitched seven innings for the
Camels, allowing just one run on two hits while fanning 10
batters. Davis is the first
Campbell hurler to strike out 10 or more batters in a game since
Justin Lilly accomplished that feat last season at Gardner Webb
(April 19).
Campbell would
post a run in the first and second innings. In the first inning, Ryan Hamme
(Wilmington, N.C.) started would come in to score on a single by
Ellis Lowe (San Diego, Calif.).
Alex Aycoth
(Sanford, Fla.) got the second inning started with a double down
the right field line. Kevin
Nelson (Sunrise, Fla.) would follow with a single to left field,
allowing Aycoth to advance to third base. Stephen Parsons (Chesapeake, Va.)
would ground into a double play, but Aycoth would score on the
play. Aycoth's run gave the
Camels a 2-0 lead.
In the top half of
the fourth inning, Zach Johnson (Smithfield, N.C.) would double
down the left field line, giving him 23 doubles on the season. Johnson now owns the record for
doubles in a single season.
Campbell would
push two more runs across in the fifth inning to extend their lead
to 4-0. After Chris Bangi
(Jacksonville, Fla.) was hit by a pitch, Ryan Hamme singled to
right field allowing Bangi to advance to second. Hamme and Bangi would each advance
ninety feet on a double steal. Bangi would score on a wild pitch
while Hamme advanced to third base. Hamme would come in to score on a
Brian Gana (Richland, Wash.) single to center field.
Jacksonville would
finally push a run across in the bottom half of the eighth
inning. Kyle Fleming would
come in to score on a Jamaal Hawkins single to left field.
Campbell would
answer with two runs in the top half of the ninth inning. Chris Bangi got the inning
started with a single.
Ellis Lowe would reach first base and be able to advance to second
thanks to a throwing error by third baseman Glen Johnson. Bangi would be able to advance
to third thanks to the error. Both Bangi and Lowe would come in to
score on a Brian Gana double down the left field line.
Ryan Hamme would
come in to relieve Logan Davis on the hill. Hamme (2-5) would be credited with the
loss after pitching 1.2 innings giving up seven hits while six runs
came in to score. Jonathon
Lopez (Vineland, N.J.) would also see action in the game giving up
the hit that scored the game winning runs; the runners on base when
Lopez entered the game were inherited from Hamme.
In the home half
of the ninth inning, Jacksonville would start out with two outs via
a strikeout and a groundout. With Campbell leading 6-3, Alex Aycoth
would drop a foul ball that allowed the Dolphins rally to
continue.
With Jacksonville
trailing 6-5, Jeremy Gillan would hit a walk-off double to right
field. Gillan's double
allowed Chuck Opachich to score the tying run, while Jamaal Hawkins
would score the winning run.
Carson Andrew
(3-3) would be credited with the win after pitching the final four
innings giving up just four hits while two runs came in to
score. Andrew struck out
six batters, while walking just one.
Jacksonville
10, Campbell 5 (DH
Game 2)
Jacksonville would
carry its late second game momentum right into game three. The Dolphins would post one run
in each of the first two innings giving them an early 2-0 lead
after two complete.
Campbell would
respond in the top half of the third inning with three runs. With Matt Keen (Four Oaks, N.C.)
standing on third, Ryan Hamme would deliver a two-out RBI double
down the right field line.
Hamme would come around to score when Ellis Lowe hit a double to
the gap in left center field. Brian Gana would follow Lowe's double
with an RBI single down the right field line. Lowe's run gave the Camels a 3-2 lead
after two and a half.
Jacksonville would
respond quickly as they posted five runs in the bottom of the third
inning to extend their lead to 7-3. All five of the Dolphins' runs were
scored with two outs; four of the five runs were unearned.
The Camels would
score another run in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Alex Aycoth
scored on a fielder's choice that allowed Chris Bangi to reach
first base. The 7-4 deficit
would be the closest that Campbell could get in the series
finale.
Jacksonville
posted three runs in its half of the seventh to extend the lead to
10-4. Campbell would manage
just one run in the top of the ninth inning as they fell by a score
of 10-5.
Campbell would use
five pitchers in the series finale against Jacksonville. Hunter Ford (Wilmington, N.C.)
would pitch just one inning allowing two runs on three hits. Dan Gardo (West Chester, Pa.)
would relieve Ford; Gardo would pitch 1.2 innings giving up four
hits while three Dolphins came in to score. Gardo was credited with the loss and
now sits at 1-3 on the season.
Campbell would
then bring in Jonathon Lopez to face Jacksonville. The junior would fail to record an out
as he faced five batters and walked three as three runs came in to
score.
Parker Fleming
(Lexington, S.C.) and Colin Parker (Princeton, N.C.) would close on
the game on the hill for Campbell. The pair allowed three runs on six
hits while striking out three.
Jacksonville
hurler Sean Green would be credited with the win and improve to 2-0
on the season. Green
pitched six innings allowing four earned runs on 10 hits.
Campbell will
return to the diamond on Tuesday when they host the Eagles of North
Carolina Central in doubleheader action at Taylor Field. Game one of the doubleheader is
slated to begin at 5:00 p.m., with game two starting approximately
30 minutes after the completion of game one.
