Campbell got plenty of offense in a 13-7 game one victory
over Stetson. However the
Campbell bats cooled in game two as Stetson defeated Campbell
5-2. With the split
Campbell now owns a 22-18 overall record, with a 6-13 mark in
league play; meanwhile Stetson owns an 18-24 record and a 9-11
A-Sun record.
Campbell 13, Stetson 7 (DH
Game 1)
Game one of Friday's twinbill
started out as a pitchers duel as each team posted zeros on the
board over the first three innings. However each team found its offensive
stride when the fourth inning rolled around.
Stetson got on the board
first with two runs in the top of the fourth. Nick Rickles scored the games first
run when he scored thanks to a fielding error by Alex Aycoth
(Sanford, Fla.). Stetson
brought in its second run when Sean Emory singled, allowing Kyle
Malsbetsch to score.
Campbell would answer right
back with a four-run fourth inning. Zach Johnson (Smithfield, N.C.) got
the inning started with a double down the left field line. Johnson came around to score on
a Carlton Floyd (Riegelwood, N.C.) single. Carlton Floyd scored on a sacrifice
fly by Kevin Nelson (Sunrise, Fla.). Floyd's run tied the game at 2-2, but
Campbell wasn't done yet.
Ellis Lowe (San Diego,
Calif.) reached on a fielding error by third baseman Sean
Emory. The error allowed
both Brian Gana (Richland, Wash.) and Chris Bangi (Jacksonville,
Fla.) to score, giving the Camels a 4-2 lead.
Stetson posted a run in the
top of the fifth and sixth inning, however Campbell responded with
a six-run sixth inning.
Bryan Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) started the inning with a single
through the left side.
Kevin Nelson reached on an error, an error that allowed Nelson and
Braswell to move to second and third respectively.
Chris Bangi singled up the
middle, allowing both Braswell and Nelson to score, giving the
Camels a 6-4 lead. Chris
Bangi came in to score when Ellis Lowe singled up the middle. Alex Aycoth followed with a
single and then Zach Johnson drew a walk. With the bases loaded, Matt Keen (Four
Oaks, N.C.) doubled to center field, allowing Lowe and Aycoth to
score, extending the lead to 9-4.
Campbell pushed one more run
across when Matt Keen scored on a Bryan Braswell single. The run scored by Keen gave the
Camels a 10-4 lead, one they would not relinquish.
Jeff Rydman (Gladstone, Mo.)
started on the mound for the Camels against the Hatters. Rydman (4-0) was credited with
the win after pitching seven innings, giving up nine hits while
five runs came in to score (three earned). Rydman set a career best with eight
strikeouts.
Campbell and Stetson each
pushed across three runs over the final three innings, as Campbell
won by a 13-7 margin.
Andy Mauldin (1-4) was
credited with the loss after pitching just five innings, while
giving up eight hits as seven Camels came in to score.
Dan Gardo (West Chester, Pa.)
relieved Jeff Rydman at the start of the eighth inning. Gardo pitched the final two innings,
allowing just two runs on two hits.
Campbell was led at the dish
in game one by Zach Johnson and Matt Keen. Johnson finished 3-of-4 with two runs
scored; meanwhile Keen was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs
scored.
Stetson 5, Campbell 2 (DH
Game 2)
Both teams seemed to have the
offense clicking in the second game, but the bats for both teams
quickly cooled.
Stetson started game two with
a two run first inning, thanks to a Casey Frawley two-run home run
to right field.
Campbell would respond with a
single run in the first and third innings. The Camels cut the deficit in half
when Ryan Hamme (Wilmington, N.C.) hit a solo home run to right
field. Campbell went on to
tie the game at 2-2 when Stephen Parsons (Chesapeake, Va.) came
around to score on a Ryan Hamme double down the right field
line.
The two runs posted by the
Camels in the first three innings were the last runs Campbell
managed to push across on Friday night.
Logan Davis (Ft. Cobb, Okla.)
started the game on the bump for the Camels. Davis pitched 7.1 innings, giving up
seven hits as four Hatters touched home plate. Davis was credited with his first loss
of the season and now owns a 6-1 mark.
Both Campbell and Stetson
went scoreless over the middle third of the game; however Stetson
posted a single insurance run in the top of the seventh, eighth and
ninth innings. Stetson
carried a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.
With two outs and D.J.
Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) standing on second, Ryan Hamme drew a
walk. Ellis Lowe was due up
at the dish and represented the tying run. However, Lowe would strike out
swinging on a 3-2 pitch.
Robby Donovan was credited
with the win after pitching 7.2 innings, allowing just two runs on
five hits. Donovan improves
his season record to 4-3.
David Burns was credited with his second save of the season. Burns pitched the final frame,
allowing no runs and no hits.
Campbell was led at the plate
in game two by Ryan Hamme.
Hamme finished 2-of-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Both of Hamme's hits were for extra
bases, one double and one home run.
Dan Gardo also saw action on
the hill in game two. Gardo
pitched the final 1.2 innings allowing one run on one
hit.
Campbell and Stetson will
square off in the series finale tomorrow afternoon. First pitch at Taylor Field is
scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
