BUIES CREEK, N.C. Campbell's 2009 season came to a close as
it was swept in doubleheader action Friday at Taylor Field. USC Upstate took game one by a
score of 5-3 and the season finale for both teams by a score of
8-2. Campbell finishes the
season at 27-24 and 7-19 in A-Sun play; meanwhile, USC Upstate
finishes at 17-37 overall and 7-23 in league play.
Campbell finishes
the season with a winning record, the first under second year
skipper Greg Goff. This is
the first winning season fo Campbell since 2001, when the Camels
finished 33-21.
USC Upstate 5,
Campbell 3 (DH Game 1)
With a berth in
next week's A-Sun Baseball Tournament still not out of the realm of
possibility, Campbell struggled to find offense as USC Upstate
jumped out to an early lead en route to the 5-3 victory.
The Spartans got
on the board first with a two run first inning. Austin Moyer and Jimmy Tanner scored
when Eric Guillen doubled down the left field line, giving USC
Upstate a 2-0 lead.
USC Upstate tacked
on another run in the second inning when Blake Green scored on a
fielder's choice that allowed Kyle Simpson to reach first
base. Green's run gave
Upstate a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half of play.
The Camels chipped
away at the Spartans lead in the bottom of the second inning. Zach Johnson (Smithfield, N.C.)
scored on a two-out RBI single by Stephen Parsons (Chesapeake,
Va.). After two innings,
Campbell trailed 3-1.
The Spartans
pushed the lead back to three with a single run in the top of the
third. Eric Guillen scored
on a fielder's choice that allowed Keith Bisgounis to reach first
base.
Trailing 4-1
entering the home half of the fifth, Campbell cut into the USC
Upstate lead. Kevin Nelson
(Sunrise, Fla.) started the inning with a single to left
center. Nelson advanced to
second on a groundout by Chris Bangi (Jacksonville, Fla.) and
advanced to third on a wild pitch by Spartan hurler Matt
Branham. Nelson scored
Campbell's second run of the game on an RBI groundout by Ellis Lowe
(San Diego, Calif.).
However, the
Spartans would immediately push the lead back to three runs as they
posted a single run in the top of the sixth. Austin Moyer scored from second base
when Keith Bisgounis singled to left center field.
Logan Davis (Ft.
Cobb, Okla.) got the call on the hill for the Camels. The junior right-hander pitched 5.1
innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with four walks and two
strikeouts. Davis was
credited with the loss against the Spartans, his second loss of the
season. Davis finished his
first season in a Campbell uniform with a 6-2 record.
Ryan Hamme
(Wilmington, N.C.) relieved Davis on the bump. Hamme pitched the final 3.2 innings,
giving up four hits while striking out two batters.
Trailing 5-2
entering the bottom of the eighth, Campbell, again, cut the lead to
two runs. Chris Bangi
scored on an RBI single by Zach Johnson.
Campbell appeared
to have a game winning rally in order in the bottom of the ninth
inning, as Graham Fronk (Charlotte, N.C.) stood on second and
Carlton Floyd (Riegelwood, N.C.) on third. However, the Camels failed to push the
runners across as Kevin Nelson grounded out, Chris Bangi flied out
and Ellis Lowe struck out to end the game.
Matt Branham was
credited with his second win of the year. Branham (2-5) pitched 7.0 innings
giving up four hits while two runs came around to score. Branham finished with seven
punch outs and just one walk.
Ellis Lowe had
just one hit in the game; however it was a significant hit for the
second year Camel. Lowe's
double in the third inning, was his 90th hit of the
season and ties the Campbell single season record for hits. Lowe ties former Camel Mike
Priest who had 90 hits in the 2005 season.
Campbell was lead
in game one by a pair of seniors who were honored prior to the
game. Stephen Parsons
finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while teammate Carlton Floyd finished
2-for-4 at the dish.
USC Upstate 8,
Campbell 2 (DH Game 2)
Game two started
the same way as game one, with USC Upstate jumping out to an early
two run lead. The Spartans
scored on a RBI single by Phillip Morgan to take a 1-0 lead. The second run by USC Upstate
came on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Medley that allowed Tommy Shovlin
to score.
USC Upstate
extended its lead to 4-0 after the top of the third inning. Eric Guillen scored on a RBI
single by Kyle Simpson for the first run of the inning. The second run of the inning came when
Jeff Medley scored on a fielder's choice that allowed Adam Waters
to reach first base.
Campbell had just
three hits over the first eight innings as it posted zeros on the
scoreboard each of the first eight innings.
USC Upstate scored
a single run in the eighth, followed by a three run ninth inning to
extend its lead to 8-0.
Campbell started
Colin Parker (Princeton, N.C.) on the hill in the series
finale. Parker pitched just
1.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and a
strikeout. Parker was
credited with the loss, his first of the season and finishes the
season with a 2-1 record.
Hunter Ford
(Wilmington, N.C.) relieved Parker in the second inning. Ford pitched 4.2 innings for the
Camels, allowing two runs on six hits. The junior southpaw struck out two
batters while allowing no walks
Josh Fish, a
senior from Bellingham, Wash., finished his Campbell career on the
mound. Fish pitched the
final three innings for the Camels on Friday. The right-hander allowed four runs on
seven hits while striking out four batters.
Dennis McCraney
was credited with his fourth victory of the season. McCraney (4-1) pitched a complete game
allowing just two runs on six hits, while walking four batters and
striking out two.
It appeared that
Campbell's 50-game streak of not being shut out would come to close
on the final day of the season. However a pair of seniors, with their
final at-bats, made sure that the streak did not end.
In the bottom of
the ninth, Ryan Hamme hit a double to the right center field gap to
lead off the inning. The
double hit by the four-year senior was his 26th of the
season and 59th of his career; with 59 doubles, Hamme is
now the Campbell career leader for doubles. Hamme passes J.C. Hendrix who had 58
doubles from 1989-92.
With Hamme
standing on second, Brian Gana (Richland, Wash.) put a charge into
a Dennis McCraney pitch, hitting a home run over the right field
wall. The two seniors both
crossed home plate as the 2009 Camels became the third team in
school history, since becoming Division I in 1978, to score in
every game the entire season. The two-run home run by Gana was the
fifth of the season for the first baseman.
Just like in game
one, it was a pair of seniors leading the way at the plate in game
two. Brian Gana finished
2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while teammate Ryan Hamme
finished with one hit and one run.
Campbell also set
other notable records in 2009, both individually and as a
team. On the individual
side, Zach Johnson is the single season leader for doubles (29)
with Ryan Hamme second with 26. Both pass Mike Priest who finished
with 21 in 2005.
Chris Bangi set
the single season record for hit by pitch with 30. Bangi shattered the previous record of
17, set by Josh Maddox in the 1993 season. Bangi needs just three hit by pitch in
the 2010 campaign to set the career mark that was tied by Ryan
Hamme. Hamme was hit by 32
pitches in his career, which ties Josh Maddox (1993-94) who had 32
hit by pitch in his two year career.
Ryan Hamme
finished the 2009 season with a .438 batting average which is the
new all-time record in a single season by a left-handed
batter. Hamme passes Bill
Wilkes who had a .394 BA in 1984.
As
a team Campbell sets new single season records in batting average
(.346), hits (634), doubles (142), runs (516), RBI (464), runs per
game (10.12), hit by pitch (123), on-base % (.444) and stolen bases
(117). The team also set a
pair of Atlantic Sun single season records with a .346 batting
average, which surpasses the .341 batting average by Florida
Atlantic in 1999.
Campbell's 10.12 runs per game passes the 9.3 runs per game set by
Stetson in the 2000 campaign.
