NASHVILLE, Tenn. In the heat of the race for the final spot
in the Atlantic Sun Baseball Tournament, Campbell would fail to
gain ground as they were swept by the Bisons of Lipscomb in
Friday's twinbill, both in heartbreaking fashion. With the two losses, Campbell drops to
24-21 and more importantly 6-16 in league play. Lipscomb improves to 21-28 (15-11
A-Sun), which clinches a berth in the 2009 A-Sun Baseball
Tournament.
Lipscomb 8, Campbell
6 (DH Game 1)
Game one saw Lipscomb take an early 1-0 lead after two innings, but
the Camels responded with a two run rally in the top of the
third.
Chris Bangi (Jacksonville, Fla.) started the third inning with a
single to left field. Bangi
advanced to second on a failed pick off attempt by Bisons hurler
Rex Brothers and advanced to third on his 18th stolen
base of the season. Bangi
came in to score, tying the game at 1-1, on Brothers' second balk
of the season.
Ryan Hamme (Wilmington, N.C.) followed with a single through the
right side. Hamme advanced
to second and third on back to back wild pitches by Rex
Brothers. Brian Gana
(Richland, Wash.) brought Hamme in from third with his
42nd RBI of the season, giving the Camels a 2-1
lead.
Lipscomb pushed a single run across in the bottom of the third to
tie the score at 2-2.
Campbell regained the lead in the top of fourth inning when Kevin
Nelson (Sunrise, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch. Nelson's 24th run of the
season gave Campbell a 3-2 lead.
Junior southpaw Jeff Rydman (Gladstone, Mo.) got the call on the
hill for the Camels. Rydman
had a tremendous outing for the Camels on Friday afternoon.
Rydman pitched 6.1 innings for the Camels giving up just five
hits. When Rydman exited,
he had just two earned runs, but the two runners on base were his
responsibility. Both of
those runners would come in to score giving the junior four earned
runs.
Rydman was still in line for the victory thanks to a sliding catch
by second baseman Ellis Lowe (San Diego, Calif.) to end the seventh
inning, with Campbell leading 5-4.
Campbell pushed a single run across in the top of the eighth inning
to extend its lead to 6-4.
However, Lipscomb would rally with a four-run eighth inning.
Reliever Dan Gardo (West Chester, Pa.) could not keep the Camels on
top as he allowed three runs to come in to score on just four hits
in his short outing of just two-thirds of an inning. When Gardo was relieved, Lipscomb
owned a 7-6 lead. Gardo
would be credited with his fourth loss of the season and now owns a
1-4 record.
Ryan Hamme finished the game on the bump for Campbell, pitching the
final inning giving up just one run on two hits.
Campbell appeared to have a rally started in the ninth inning with
Colin Parker (Princeton, N.C.) standing on second and Carlton Floyd
(Riegelwood, N.C.) on first base. With just one out, Bryan Braswell
would ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Josh Cothman, who relieved Rex Brothers, was credited with the
victory and now owns a 1-1 record on the season.
Leaders at the dish for Campbell in game one included Chris Bangi,
Ellis Lowe, Ryan Hamme and Brian Gana. Bangi finished 2-for-2 with three runs
scored and two hit by pitches. Lowe finished with two hits and a run
scored; meanwhile Hamme finished with two hits, one RBI and one run
scored. Lastly, Gana
finished with two hits and two RBI.
Lipscomb 12,
Campbell 11 (DH Game 2)
Game two started the exact same as game one with Campbell owning a
2-1 lead after the top half of the third inning. The game ended the exact same with a
Lipscomb rally en route to a victory.
With Campbell owning a 2-1 lead heading to the home half of the
fourth inning, Lipscomb would post three runs to take a lead of
4-2, a lead they would not relinquish.
Right-hander Logan Davis (Ft. Cobb, Okla.) started the game on the
mound for the Camels. Davis
pitched four complete innings, but saw action in the fifth, failing
to record an out. The
junior gave up six runs on six hits, while striking out four.
After Brian Gana (Richland, Wash.) scored in the top of the fifth
to cut the lead to 4-3, Lipscomb extended the lead to six thanks to
a five run fifth inning.
Lipscomb scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh to extend
its lead to 10-3.
Lipscomb hurler Josh Smith got the start, pitching four complete
innings, giving up two runs on five hits. However, Charles Williams was credited
with the win after pitching 3.2 innings as five runs came around to
score on nine hits.
Hunter Ford (Wilmington, N.C.) relieved Logan Davis in the fifth
inning. Ford pitched two
complete innings, allowing four runs on four hits with a pair of
walks and strikeouts.
Colin Parker (Princeton, N.C.) was called in to relieve Ford. Parker pitched the seventh and
eighth innings, giving up just one hit with a strikeout and a
walk.
Campbell made the game interesting thanks to a four run eighth
inning. With Kevin Nelson
(Sunrise, Fla.) and Chris Bangi (Jacksonville, Fla.) in scoring
position, Ellis Lowe (San Diego, Calif.) singled to right field,
allowing Chris Bangi to score. Ryan Hamme (Wilmington, N.C.)
delivered a RBI single to right field, allowing Nelson to score and
Lowe to advance to third.
Brian Gana hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Ellis Lowe to
score; Ryan Hamme reached second thanks to an error by the Lipscomb
shortstop. Hamme came in to
score on Alex Aycoth's (Sanford, Fla.) single to right center. Hamme's run cut the Bisons lead
to 10-7.
In
the ninth, Campbell started the inning with a lead off walk to
pinch hitter D.J. Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) followed by Chris
Bangi being hit by a pitch.
Ellis Lowe followed with a single through the left side to load the
bases for the Camels with no outs. Ryan Hamme and Brian Gana would both
go down swinging.
With two outs and fifteen hits on the board, the Camels got their
first extra base hit of the game off the bat of Zach Johnson
(Smithfield, N.C.). Johnson
delivered a two-out grand slam to give the Camels an 11-10
lead.
Ryan Hamme and Colin Parker would switch positions in the bottom of
the ninth inning as Hamme moved to the mound and Parker moved to
right field.
Lipscomb third baseman Ryan Wilkins hit a leadoff solo home run to
tie the game at 11 a piece.
Left fielder Allen Bolden followed with a double to the right
center field gap. Hamme
intentionally walked designated hitter Tennyson Dodd. Logan Hostettler, the Bisons catcher,
hit a walk off single to the left center field gap, giving Lipscomb
the 12-11 victory and the doubleheader sweep.
Hamme was credited with the loss and now owns a 2-6 record on the
season. Kyle Tognazzini,
blew the save in the top of the ninth after giving up four runs on
two hits. However,
Tognazzini was credited with the win and now has a 3-3 mark on the
season.
Ellis Lowe and Zach Johnson combined for eight hits in game two,
with six RBI and four runs.
Between the two games on Friday, Campbell left 24 runners left on
base, while Lipscomb stranded 12.
Campbell and Lipscomb will square off tomorrow in the series
finale. First pitch between
the Camels and the Bisons is scheduled for 7 p.m. (ET).
