CONWAY, S.C. - Mitchell Cardenas scored the game's lone goal on a
76th minute penalty kick as Campbell defeated Coastal Carolina
Saturday night in a men's soccer exhibition match.
Fighting Camel keepers Ted Awana and Patrick Tinucci combined for
the shutout. Awana had to make only one save, a 25-yard shot that
he tipped over the bar in the first half.
Campbell had two scoring chances in the first half against the '08
Big South runner-up. Justin Madrid's 12th-minute shot from outside
the box barely missed the target. Pre-season all-conference pick
Vince Petrasso also forced a standout save on a first-half
attempt.
Cardenas' spot kick was set up when Pat Danford was fouled in the
box with less than 15 minutes remaining.
The Camels nearly doubled the margin in the 80th minute when Brian
Urioste dribbled past the outside back and leaped over the keeper,
but a Coastal defender was able to recover and clear the ball from
danger before the sophomore could get a shot on net.
"It was a scrappy game," said Campbell head coach Doug Hess. "You
want to win, play good soccer and keep progressing. That's what
these pre-season games are all about. When you get the
opportunities, however, I'd like to see us be a little stingier and
put a few away."
Campbell, which won the 2008 A-Sun regular season championship and
finished 25th in the final Soccer America national poll, concludes
its exhibition schedule on Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. match at home
against Elon.
