BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Evan James' goal in the 85th minute proved to
be the game-winner Saturday night as Charlotte defeated visiting
Campbell 2-1 in men's soccer action at Transamerica Field at the
Irwin Belk Center.
The 49ers (2-1-1) went 26 minutes without a shot in the final
stanza before Luke Exley set up James' second strike of the season
with only 5:08 remaining in the contest. His effort from 25 yards
found the left corner of the net past diving CU keeper Ted
Awana.
The goal marked James' second in as many outings. He scored for
Charlotte in a 1-1 draw Wednesday at Clemson.
"We played a very strong team in Charlotte," said Camel head coach
Doug Hess. "They run and play with conviction, and our team can
learn from that."
Charlotte took an early lead when Exley scored off a rebound from
James' shot in the 10th minute.
The Camels, however, drew level just 2:33 later when Mitchell
Cardenas scored from the penalty spot - his second goal of the
year.
The 49ers out-shot Campbell by a 7-1 margin in the first half, but
Awana made five saves to keep the score deadlocked. Charlotte
finished with a 12-6 edge in shots, 9-2 in shots on goal.
Awana finished with seven saves, while Martin had just one stop for
the hosts.
Campbell had three opportunities after 75 minutes before James'
goal broke the tie. Vince Petrasso's shot was saved by Charlotte
keeper David Martin in the 76th minute, before Khalil Johnson's
attempt was blocked two minutes later.
Petrasso also launched a shot after 80 minutes that sailed high of
the crossbar. The senior from Ontario had one final chance to
score, but his 90th minute free kick from just outside the box
missed high.
The 49ers are undefeated (9-0-1) in their last 10 home openers.
The Camels are 1-2 on the road this season, but 13-10-2 on
opponents' home fields since the start of the 2007 campaign. CU
returns to action Tuesday in a 7:00 p.m. kick-off at North Carolina
State.
