WILMINGTON, N.C. - Shawn Guderian scored two second-half goals and
UNC Wilmington defeated Campbell 3-1 Tuesday night in the men's
soccer season opener for both teams.
Guderian's strikes in the 49th and 67th minutes came during a
stretch where the Seahawks out-shot the Camels 6-0 and helped UNCW
end a four-match losing streak against its Eastern North Carolina
rival.
UNCW went in front just 3:26 into the second half on Guderian's
goal in the box. Nassim Berhouni and Etienne Boulinger set up the
play. His strike in the 67th minute off Christian Davidson's cross
marked the most goals the Seahawks have scored against Campbell
since a 3-2 win at Buies Creek in 2002.
The Seahawks took the lead in the 16th minute on Brian Harrison's
volley off Shaun Utterson's corner kick.
Camel freshman Mitchell Cardenas equalized with his first career
goal in the 24th minute on a counter attack off Vince Petrasso's
short cross.
In a match-up of two defending regular season conference champions,
UNCW (Colonial Athletic Association) held a 19-6 advantage in shots
over Campbell (Atlantic Sun), including a 12-4 margin in attempts
on target.
Tuesday's contest marked the 44th between the Camels and the
Seahawks. Campbell owns a 24-19-1 edge all-time over UNCW.
Camel senior Ted Awana finished with eight saves in his first
career Division I start. Brandon Miller made three stops for the
Seahawks.
Campbell returns to action with its home opener on Saturday in a
7:00 p.m. kick-off against William & Mary.
